Day 1

TLMitchell

is dazed & confused
For the first time since I was 14 I find myself jobless. Not as dire as it might sound...in their infinite wisdom the major domestic government that has employed me slaving over a hot radar scope for close to a quarter century has put me out to pasture at the ripe age of 56. Public Law forces Air Traffic Controllers to retire no later than the last day of the month of their 56th birthday. That was yesterday. Which makes today Saturday. As well as tomorrow and the day after that and the day after that.... lather, rinse, repeat. EDIS! (Every Day Is Saturday)

Many ask what I'm going to do? Gonna go back to pushing airplanes through the sky? Gonna look for a job? I've had jobs, I didn't like them much. One of the goals of submitting to the lunacy of working at Club Fed was earlier-than-normal retirement. Despite the fallacies the Speaker of the House has been slinging about "generous Federal retirement benefits", don't believe him. Compared to the corporates that've been cutting their employees throats by drying up pension plans I'm still more fortunate than many with a pension, Social Security and 401k. Do I have to work? Nope. But I get to pick and choose those things that I want to do for a buck or two.

My first job at 14 was at Willie's Supersonic Car Wash.... a cut above a swirl-o-matic. I've been doing some detailing jobs the last few years that interest me but turning down more opportunities than I take. Looks like things have come full circle... start my work life washing cars and I'll end up washing cars til the end in some fashion. :D

In between waiting for checks at the 1st of the month and occasionally polishing paint I intend to canvas as many North American two-lanes on two wheels as possible. There's hidden gems and interesting characters everywhere just waiting to be discovered. In the past 12 years I've stumbled across hundreds of people from all over the country.... actually, all over the world.. that get on their bikes and travel extensively to put faces to names they've encountered via Usenet and Forums. Most have become lifelong friends staying in each others homes when traveling, attending weddings, births and funerals. The Internet has truly made the world a smaller and closer place in many instances, despite all the mayhem it's also enabled. So don't be surprised if some day you get an e-mail, text or phone call or a saddletramp shows up at your shop just to say Hi because he was in the neighborhood.

And I'll see some of you at Detail Fest next March. It's close to the top of the dance card. :yay

See you down the road,

TL

Good luck to you TL, I have a feeling you're going to enjoy retirement. At 56 you're still a young man and able to do a lot of stuff. EDIS, I like that.

I got into the wrong field... Banking doesn't offer early retirement.

Congratulations and I hope you enjoy everyday

I hope when (if) I can retire in about 35 years, I can spend my retirement on a bike and detailing the cars I choose to detail. Sounds like you came out pretty good. If your travels bring you to Southern Il or Southeast Mo, drop me a line. As long as you dont mind riding with a crotch rocket, I can take you down some really beautiful and challenging roads around here.

Enjoy your free time you have now and from one former Controller to another.........Take one day at a time.............GULFZULU!

man i wish i could retire at 56... congrats TL. NOW YOU GET TO DO WHATEVER THE HELL YOU WANT....MUST BE NICE

Congratulations on your retirement TL. I really enjoyed your story (even more than I enjoy your usual postings). If you are ever driving through the north Orlando area (Longwodd or Deltona) give me a ring and I'll take you for a meal and a drink. Well, if your on your bike you don't get to drink:rofl but I will.

Good luck TL!! :yourrock

Thanks to all, a few replies in no particular order:

Depends, a friend that was a commercial loan officer was shown the door when Citizens swallowed up Charter One and almost simultaneously got sucked up by RBS. He got a buyout with full benefits at 54. Right place, right time.

I never met a bike I didn't like. That Scenic Byway through the bootheel is nice, way too short though. I'll probably be doing the River Road from OH to Cairo one of these days.

Congrats and best of luck TL!!!!!!!! Now you have MORE time for autopiaFORUMS!!!!

Dunno, I'm headed somewhere towards the Arctic Circle to a place called Area 999. A guy named Mr. S. inquired about getting his sleigh collection polished up. :D I've got a cigar-chomping, sandal-wearing Canukian assistant to tape up the trim for me.

Congradulations, now you can get into your fishing or golfing just like the rest of them!

As far as those two activities go, I'd sooner watch paint dry. I shall endeavor to keep myself amused however. I'll have to get my Caterpillar hat on and hang out at McDonalds at 5 AM to consult with the ear & nose hair bunch. I'm sure they'll have recommendations as they're experienced at this layabout lifestyle.

I don't think I'll be laying around the Riviera scoping out yachts with the rich n famous, there's some budgetary limitations. My new hobby of being frugal and making Lincoln squeal ought to provide some opportunities.

Good luck in all of your upcoming endeavors!

I'm thinking of starting a video production company featuring.....ME! Any pointers? ;)

I'll take you up on that in Stuart next March. If you're driving make mine Maker's Mark manhattans. :bigups You can do a comprehensive review on my lampshade-wearing technique.

Wilco. Just a short hop down the Nile to the pyramids, isn't it?

Did they keep that burg from finding itself underwater?

Yes as far as I know. Man that flood was Biblical. I live several miles out in the country and had to boat in and out. The water was so deep that you could stand up in the boat and almost touch the power lines in places. (obviously I never tried it).If they hadn't blown those levees, Cairo and every town around it would have been goners. That was in April and the water just went down off of the main road that goes to our house this past week.
