Dawn Power Dissolver : Update

I don't know guys, I mean, why is it some folks get lung cancer after only a few years smoking and others (like my Dad) smoke all their lives (died 5 days short of his 93rd birthday). I'm 48 and it seems like more people are dying from cancer if you listen to the mainstream media but if you dig further you'll find that life expectancy is going up, personally, I got too much other crap to worry about than to give a cleaner a second thought. Do any of you handle this stuff 8 hours a day - 5 days a week? That's what I thought, but, you do what you feel is best and I'll do the same.

I wash my pads in tthe sink with dawn-power-dissolver and never had any issues with skin or breathing the fumes. I rinse my hands often when using it. IF it was that dangerous would Wally Mart sell it to the public? I mean it's not like it's industrial solvent. But, ya'll do what feels best for you, me? I still say this stuff is much milder on you than that XMT crap.

Well, heh - maybe you've got hands of stone, but I've still got fairly soft, young'n hands. It destroyed my skin. People make fertilizer bombs out of store bought products. I mean, they sell bleach, even hydroflouric acid. That stuff is nasty.

That's reckless, foolish logic.

It's listed as a carcinogen for a reason.

Actually, the life expectancy of the US adult is decreasing, due to obesity related ailments and deaths.

Please, let's not do this to my thread, it's just comparing the cleaner. I see nothing wrong with wearing gloves and being safe, please don't try to convince other people otherwise.

I recommend gloves, and I mentioned a respirator because he was using it with a steamer, a logical precaution. People wear respirators for regular old dust, so it's completely justified. Why am I even having this discussion? It's basic workplace safety.

Hey, can this stuff be used to clean up MF and WW towels?

I think mine are now saturated with wax from buffing (despite machine washing in hot water). I've read that the best way to "refurb" the towels is to boil them, however, I'm afraid I'd end up like that one guy who nearly burned his house down. Perhaps this is a better solution?

Thoughts?

EDIT: Nevermind, I found it in a search. Accumulator mentioned in one post doesn't seem to be any harm, but then some of the WW towels appeared to get a little stiffer? *shrug* Will try it out sometime.

Hey Charles - relax bro, we can agree to dissagree can't we. Call me reckless and I'll laugh - it's friggin household cleaner not plutonium. Yeah, there are things you shouldn't do - like mixing bleach and ammonia, unless you want to take the external nap. But I've managed to make it this far without looking like a haz-mat team doing my chores.

I agree with you about us gettin fat, that is a preventable disease (in most cases) it's just a matter of eating healthy (in small portions) and gettin off the couch and doing something. When I farmed with my uncles (yeah, we grew tobacco) I was skinny. Now, sitting on my butt in a cubicle all day, it takes an effort to keep moving when I get home. But, my motivation is my kids, I got to be there for them as long as I can. - If the dawn doesn't get me - ha!

I checked the MSDS sheet for Power Dissolver...and seen no Butyl type product..

but it does contain

Monoethanolamine

MEA (monoethanolamine) is mainly used in sweetening natural gas and coal gas, and as soaps or amides in heavy-duty detergents. MEA is also used in the production of ethylene amines. You will find this in most laundry soaps also....

It is even is some anti bacterial hand soaps...

also it contain Lye in a less than 1% solution....

for your info...even Woolite contains LYE....

Thanks Al, you just added another year to my life. I'll put you on my Christmas list!

your welcome...lol....

I work at a Government truck repair facility....and OSHA came in and did some tests on the air quality and also tested some individuals ..and stopped us from using any Butyl type products...its some scary stuff...people in the shop were complaining of hand pains..headaches...breathing problems..it was all from Butyl type cleaners...it does absorb in by the skin...

We now use citrus type cleaners that are Butyl free and they work as good or better...I sent Pat300sx a bottle to try and he liked it....

its time to think green on cleaners .....and wear nitrile gloves when ever using any strong cleaners....and good ventilation....ever have a APC choke you....thats a bad sign....

Hey Al..what are those? How about the old style rubber gloves you used to wear washing dishes at the sink? I was thinking about getting those if I could find them for using wheel acid.

You can pick up Nitrile gloves at Home Depot. They carry all different types of protective gloves, and even have a chart to recommend a glove for the chemical you'll be working with.

I had XMT Pad cleaner choke me before - and that was at the sink with the window open. I think the only other thing was Bleach White and I learned to do the spray and dash when using that stuff (outside of course). Anybody remember the Simpson's when Homer mixed all the cleaners together and was in the basement with no vents? He started trippin like a LSD experience!

Don't diss on gloves and such. I don't use any of it, and I'm going to start - cuz these chemicals can't be good for me. Besides, the ladies love the soft hands.

I said it before, I brought up all that "hazmat"(not even remotely what I said, but whatever) stuff because the guy was going to use it in a steamer. Different ballgame.

:ignore

If the dawn doesn't get to you? You grew tobacco? What's next, a rant about us young'ns and our shenanigans? Whatever chief. If you're going to tell me to chill, at least don't be so condescending about it.

I've made perfectly legitimate recommendations, and I'm sorry if some doofus is ashamed to wear gloves, or that it's not socially acceptable to wear a respirator because they don't look cool. Seriously, if you're going to bother me about it, go work at a place with real HAZMAT like I do. I guess it's become normal to care for my health mr health nut. I don't know whether this stuff is toxic, but when it turns your skin into a scaly mess, it can't be good for you.

I'm not trying to convince anybody, just throwing things out there for the betterment of anybody using something potentially dangerous. If you don't like it, keep it to yourself instead of trying to incite an argument on an internet forum.

PS- What's an external nap?

I used dawn power disolver today without gloves.. my hands have never been this dried out, it's kind of scary. Doesn't feel good at all.

I have a story to share :) I cooked a lot in college, mostly spicy food. One day, my buddies and I discovered habaneros. All things internet recommended gloves when working with them. Pffft, I be good cook, me no need gloves.

So I cut one up, cleaned out some seeds, dropped it in my spaghetti sauce, went to do something else for an hour while the sauce simmered gently, then went to take a leak (note: I am male) before eating dinner.

I cried for half an hour straight. :shocked

I repeated the mistake 8 years later (last year). :faint:

I have this inherent knack for doing the dumbest things :dig

A friend of mine did the same thing. Stood in the bathroom leaning over the sink for an hour with cold water running over his pecker wincing in pain the whole time. Never did understand why he didn't just jump in the shower? Would have been much easier than leaning over the sink.

He said Neosporene with pain reliever in it helped the most. Hope that helps should you ever make the mistake again.

Yeah Chuck, here in North Carolina, tobacco has been grown for a couple hundred years - and it was the cash crop for many years. I can't say I'm a smoker although I do enjoy an occassional cigar. I didn't mean to get your panties in a wad, I was just trying to say do what you feel is right for you - ok, nothing personal. And I don't worry what's "socially acceptable" on my own land in my own damn garage, I use protection IF I feel there is a reason for it -like safety glasses while running a chain saw or weed trimmer. Maybe growing up on a farm and having and old man that survived WWII in the Marines made me a little tougher. Oh yeah, I use to wash my hands in lacquar thinner to get the paint off when I worked at the auto body shop in high school, that's been 30 years and no effects yet. But that was back when it was single stage paint.

And I meant to say eternal nap on the other post.

lmao :LOLOL - my turn with a story! Me my wife and my then 2 yr old daughter went to Carolina Beach last year, her mom dad and brother and his friend went too. We walked to a local place and had dinner and they said would you like to try some peppers, well they said they were habaneros, I was like hey I'm game if all the other guys are, of course they agreed but I had to take the first bite! I cried till it hurt, then I did the un thinkable I rubbed my right eye then my nose....I hurt so bad after that for a few days even.... Never done that since then though....My brother in law licked the pepper and thought it was the worst thing ever...We got a free meal out of the deal though....

for me I went through 10 slices of bread and 3 glasses of milk (water made it much worse for me), I found out later that mouth wash is supposed to help
