Dawn Detergent

Do any of you ever recommend using Dawn Detergent?

I live in Boston and usually break it out for the first full detail day of the spring season. I figure it strips down the car and lets me build up an good coat of wax evenly throughout the year. But I notice that the first 2 waxing sessions or so are 'labor intensive', probably because the wax doesn't want to come off such a wax starved surface.

Is this a good idea? Or is there no reason to use Dawn detergent?

Pull the MSDS on Dawn and any car wash you desire. You'll find the chemical composition to be the same. Dawn is a generic detergent, nothing more. It has absolutely no wax stripping compounds.

Regardless of all facts, the myths and hyperbole will always continue on this forum.

I don't see a point on washing my car with something not one single paint manufacturer recommends and most caution against using...and they are not in a position to benefit in any way from what products you use to wash your car.

To remove wax use a concentrated isopropal (SP) alcohol wipe down. Do it twice if it makes you happy. It is a solvent.

There are tons, and I mean tons, of threads on this topic. I don't understand why we must discuss this topic again...

+1. Please do a search when in doubt!

Many concours winners use Windex or Pledge as a LSP, and believe it or not, peanut butter on trim. I don't think you'll find those on the shelves of a detailing store.

I washed my boat after every use with Joy and spray/whiped with Pledge. Boat had heavy use at Lake Havasu in 120 degree summers. My boat looked brand new 15 years later when I sold it.

to clean the chrome exhaust tips I would slice a lemmon in half and rub the chrome until clean.
