danase.com going out of business

The situation I refer to is this, I order things from California all the time, sum times around 25 lbs shipped by ups, I am in the midwest ,five shipping days its here...ups ground...usualy about $9.00.....now I get a light package that is coming one third of the distance and its $16.95....thats what iam talking about.....ridiculous , but its my fault I didnt pay enough attention , now I will . :)

Chances are that person sending you a 25 pound package for $9 from Cali. is taking a nice hit on shipping. I'll promise that. They probably do a lot of small orders where they make up for it though. USPS just for a medium flat rate box is something like $10 now and you can't fit much in them from what I've seen. I just sent a package through USPS Priority to California and it was something like $25 for a 12 pound box.

I think a good way to sum it up regarding the shipping is that someone has to pay for the box, packing material, tape, someone to pack the box and the actual cost of shipping the item. When companies offer free shipping, all of the above costs come out of the profit of the items being sent inside the box. Along with these costs, you have the actual cost of the item itself (cost of goods sold) then the merchant has to pay credit card fees, website hosting, utilities, rent/mortage, payroll, taxes on the profit and hopefully out of all this, the owner crosses their fingers and hops there is something left to put food on their own table. Oh, I almost forgot, take another 10-20% off of the top when they run discount codes!

I used to run a store that sold car wax and detailing supplies and now I do not. If I was bringing home great money and making a ton of money off of shipping, perhaps I would still be in the product business.

It doesn't make good economic sense to order an item or two online. What's the point of that? The customer thinks they are paying too much for shipping, the vendor is barely making anything because it is a small order and the one that actually wins is the shipping company because they get another package to deliver.

I would like all Detail City members just to keep this post in mind when you are ordering products online. I know that you work hard to make your money and sometimes even harder to keep as much of your hard earned money as possible. Just remember that there are businesses out there that need to make a profit in order to continue serving you and you may not always have the big picture in mind when you are looking for the lowest cost possible. If something doesn't look right, pick up the phone and speak with the vendor and ask if anything can be done, taking your order into consideration.

Just one more thing, I would get calls asking for the shipping cost on a small dollar item, lets say $12.95 and when I told them it would be $7.50 for shipping I would get an earful about how it's over 50% of the product cost. Hey, it's not my fault you are trying to order one item. How about if that same box had a $500.00 bracelet in it and the shipping was still $7.50, does it all of the sudden sound fair for the same size box to the same location. Nothing changed except the item in question and the shipping companies really don't care what's inside as long as it isn't hazardous, flammable or illegal. The cost of shipping is the cost of shipping.

Hopefully this helps others see the bigger picture and online vendors all over the world can thank me for saying what needs to be said.

:exactly:Perfectly said, Troy!

Vendors in the know will use a logistics management company to ship via UPS, FedEx, USPS and common carrier.

My wife's company stopped doing direct business with the big carriers and chose a logistics management company. The management company negotiates their shipping deals with the big boys.

They shipped more product in 09 and saved over $12,000, passing the savings on to the consumer and increased merchandise sales on most orders.

Some vendors are able to take advantage of discounted shipping. However, they are not obligated nor do they always pass on the discounts.

If a vendor's shipping is $250,000 per year and they are dealing direct with shippers, they are probably overpaying.

Adam (Adam's Polishes) had posted comments in his forum about his switching from UPS to Fed Ex when he moved his place to Colorado. It gives you insight on the shipping business.

Really? I can't remember a time when I shipped out a package of samples to folks across the country and it cost me more than $5-6. I've even sent a few full size bottles in boxes to folks and I can't remember it costing $8. Granted, I wasn't sending it overnight or anything, usually the cheapest shipping option that USPS offered. Priority mail perhaps? And I'm just "the little guy" - I have to assume that a place that sells hundreds of thousands of dollars a year and ships hundreds of packages daily must get some sort of shipping cost break.
One 32 oz. bottle, Iowa to Georgia, $8.18 regular parcel post, $10.70 Priority Mail.
One 16 oz. bottle, $7.02 regular, same $10.70 Priority Mail.
What am I doing wrong?
$5 or $6 shipping doesn't seem to be available here.

Lots of products are available at different retailers, generally speaking the products are usually the same price. The shipping cost differ sum times because of zones or should....but sum times thats proven wrong too.
With this said ,if the product price is the same as you compare...and the shipping rates differ, then just compare the bottom line.
It does make since to try and consolidate orders so that you arent paying a lot of shipping charges...but here is the catch 22,if you like to try different mouse traps :D ,every entity doesnt have every product,so here we are shipping an item or two to check it out....thats why our detail product shelves are on overload...:yikes::D
