DACP Disappointment

Excellent! :bow Thanks, Mike. I was all against getting a new black car because of my anal retentiveness, but your post actually made the decision easier for me. :)

BTW, I was just being nitpicky about the Hardness. You see, I am a geologist by training, and I those types of scales being misused so much for "creative" marketing that I am a little quick to jump in. But your explanation makes perfect sense to me. Guess I'll convince my wife not to get that white car after all! :D

Remember, the entire "hardness" thing about white depends on whether or not is "cleared".

That's why when I first chimed in on this post I asked if the white paint was cleared or not.

Like I said, I know most cars today come with clear coats, but... I don't know if most "White" cars come with clear coats.

Because the titanium dioxide powder is so resistant to degradation, I think, (notice I couched my words with, "I think", I certainly don't "Know), that some auto manufactures may skip the clear on white paints because they know they are very "Durable" without the clear.

Just a thought.

On that same note, if you buy a car that has a black finish, and the car is cleared, then your not working on a soft black finish, your working on a "Hard" clear coated finish.

Confused? Me too!

All I know… is….

It's all about the paint…

Mike,

Wow! Thanks for taking the time to provide that lengthy reponse.

Now, your question. As I understand it, my car does have a clearcoat. That's what I've been told by BMW dealers AND when I purchased some touch-up paint from the dealer it came as a kit. One bottle of white, one bottle of clear. So to the best of my knowledge, it's clearcoated.

I just came back from the auto body supply shop, where I returned a bottle of PI-III Finishing Glaze and purchased a bottle of FCRC and PI-III Machine Glaze. I'm going to try the FCRC later today and see if it does a better job than the DACP. I'll post results to this thread.

If what you say is true, about DACP not doing any work and the PC not doing any work then I guess I was the only thing doing any work yesterday.:shocked

Oh I definitely agree there!

....but Larry is using a PC. ;)

Oopps... forgot about that detail,

That's my weak area, I have not used wool pads on PC's.

I have recently aquired a "boat load" of pads, both foam and wool to play with. So perhaps I will learn a thing or two in the future, but for now, I'll have let someone else with more expertise chime in on this one.

That's funny! :D

Good luck.

Hey Larry in the PC thread in my sig there are links to 2 really informative PC tutorials if you haven't read them yet (near the bottom of the post). In one of them Alboston uses a wool pad and some interesting reading ensues. Geekysteve's article also discusses how aggressive different product/pad combos are and their uses. HTH and good luck!

EDIT: I think what Mike quoted above is funny too! :lol I always find it amusing that in physics you could be pushing down on a table with all your might and sweating like a pig, but technically no "work" is being done! :D

4DSC,

Those two links have been a life line for me. Thanks for making it so easy to access them. I thought I had read everything, but I guess I missed the AlBoston post. I'll check it out.

Good Luck Larry!

I am sure that with all of the help that is available on this board, you will get rid of all (or most) of the swirls and scratches!! Take some before and after pics if you can!!

Cheers!

Tim

Hey everyone,

Thanks for all the great info. Like I said earlier, I was going to try the FCRC this afternoon. Well, I used the PC and a yellow cutting pad. I did 1/2 the hood and I can notice a considerable difference in diminished scratching and better shine. The FCRC did a much better job at getting some of the scratches out than the DACP did. Now, it's not 100% perfect, but from where I stand (pun intended) it looks much better. I tried to get a picture of the hood but they just didn't come out well enough to show the difference on "film".

Anyway, I think I'll redo the car with the FCRC and them move on from there. I could probably go straight to wax from there, but I will try the PI-III MG with white pad and see if that brings up the shine a bit more. I'll post some pics when I'm done. I know it's rewarding to see the fruits of your labor, but also nice to show the folks that helped the finished product too!:xyxthumbs

O.K. After using the yellow pad with FCRC I went to the white pad with 3M PI-III MG (per unclearty). This picture is the end result. That's my halogen light on the shelf pointing up to give some indirect light and provide a good object for reflection.

I think it came out pretty well!
