DACP & CMA Wool Pad

Hi Guys,

How abrasive would a wool pad misted with QD and DACP be??? Would it get through most swirls and nasty watermarks? Would it be better to try the wool pad dry?

Personally, I like going with a more aggressive compound and a yellow pad than going to the wool pad. I just really haven't found my "comfort" zone with the wool pad and have found the foam pads to be more predictable and I know what to expect.

What compund would you recommend?? What would a wool pad do thats so different compared to a foam pad?

I have used both but I perfer the foam pads. I used Meguair's red #9006 with DACP and it works great. You may have to go over some areas more thna once.

First off, it would help to know if you plan on using a PC or a rotary.



There is a general consensus around here that you should use the least aggressive method possible to remove whatever defects your paint has. Along that line, I would start with a foam cutting pad, maybe even a polishing pad and DACP. I myself have had great results with Meguiar's red foam cutting pad and 3M Fine Cut Rubbing Compound (FCRC), which is about the same cutting power as DACP - possibly a little milder. I used that combo to remove horrible hologram swirls from the hood of a dark green Maxima. If you have some foam pads handy, start off with them, you might be surprised with the results.



In regards to using the wool pad dry, PLEASE DON'T! You could create more serious paint problems than you have right now.



Good luck with your swirl and water mark removal. I assume you will be working on the Skyline in your avatar - very nice!

Indeed it is my R34 i want to detail. I have a PC but after having analyzing the watermarks which have etched and the swirls, i will definatley need something with a big bite. After reading many threads i dont really want to experiment for day after day as paint thickness on the R34 wasnt on top of Nissans priority list :D

Nissans have great paint, hard paint at that



I would recommend you team up a foam cutting pad with a DACP then follow that up with a milder polish like SFP to remove any haze then top with your favorite sealant/wax. I cut through some nasty looking swirls on my honda with that combo, but had no haze so I went right to the sealant after DACP. :xyxthumbs



Big fan of the R34, please post some pics of that bad boy for us to see. While your at it get some pics of the defects, it really would be easier to point you in a direction if we could see the problem.
 
For the type of problem you describe, I like a PC with an orange pad. I use the three Menzerna polishes. All of this is available from: www.properautocare.com. Menzerna Power Gloss takes out everything up to and including 1000 grit swirl marks. Menzerna Intensive takes out the dullness created by the Power Gloss. Menzerna Final puts an amazing finish on your paint.
 
I havent had to use a wool pad on my paint but I have used 4" wool pads and metal polish on my mufflers and exhaust, results were fantastic! :up
 
what is something a tad more aggressive than DACP that i could use with a CMA orange pad? i have some bird droppings on the roof of my car that i cant remove. i tried DACP, with a PC on 6 and CMA orange pad and still could not get rid of it. i dont want to use wool pad just yet. thanks.

Can't you just try a Lake Country yellow cutting pad? I thought they were supposed to be more agressive than the orange pad.

I have used CMA's wool pad before using a PC on some hard to get to swirls and scratches on my previouse jet black 740iL. Here is what I did:



1. Wool pad with PC and DACP or Menzerna's IP.



2. Cutting Pad with PC and DACP.



3. Polishing pad with PC and SECP/GEPC, VM or Menzerna's FP.



4. Then I used EX x 2.



5. 2 Layers of Souveran wax as a topper.

A PC with a wool pad can work. Just make sure that you follow the backing down of abrasiveness of pads and products to end up with a deep glossy shine!

Well, i think AMP01 has summed it all up for me! His BMW looks great!!!! I will pluck up the courage and pick up my PC for the first time with the wool pad and attack the bodywork :D

Should i mist the wool pad with some QD or should i just leave it dry???

Add another Bayside 34 to that list, Palmers Green area. He rang me yesterday and may pop round so we can have a look at his paint probs.....



Will keep an eye out for Shin's old 33... Nice that it's stayed in the area :).

All the more reason to start mild. I used DACP and a Lake Country polishing pad on my car for a mid-winter cleanup. In reality it didn't take that long (even in the cold) to "work" the DAPC panel by panel and remove ALL BUT THE VERY WORST scratches.



My advice would be to start with DACP/polishing pad. If that doesn't get the results you want you can either repeat the process or move up to a cutting pad. I really don't like wool pads and feel that they are best left for polishing out wetsanding marks.
 
GEZ- Using the wool pad doesn't really make as much of a difference as you might expect. I believe GeekySteve estimated the wool to be about 40% more aggressive than the foam cutting pad.



*I* sure didn't find the (CMA) wool pad to be all that much more aggressive than a cutting pad, but as said, it's not quite as consistent. DON'T use it dry! Spray with QD and use a little more product than normal.



I'd say do what you can with the DACP/cutting pad, then hit the remaining (bad) scratches either with the wool pad or with more passes with the cutting pad. But don't overdo it, you don't want to cut through the paint (yes, it CAN be done with a PC).

Alex, i had a propper look at the spec lift of the R33 shin sold and looks as if its quite a monster....Cant wait till it arrives.

I cant believe there is R34 in the area lol, does he post on the GTR board??

I don't know yet to be honest, he never mentioned the board when he called me..... I'll ask him on Sunday.

I'll also let him know that the paint overspray he has will mean a complete respray from 'Team Bayside' to Midnight purple. I'm sure he'll go away a happy man :D:D:D....
