Customer came back wanting $

Joe, this can all be prevented next time... If I'm doing a carpet cleaning I always tell my customers, "Now, there may be some stains that I can't remove and there may also be some stains that come back after the carpets have dried. The one's I can't remove, I can't remove them because they require that I use very harsh chemicals to remove them, which I won't use because I don't like buying people new carpets or they require too much rubbing/manhandling which will severely disfigure the carpet making it look like Buckwheat is lying on your floor.

Now sometimes stains do come back because soap attracts dirt. Therefore when I remove the original stain from the surface, whatever stained it originally may still be deeper in the carpet and could possibly come back to the surface. If this happens just call me and I'll be more than happy to come back and clean it again. You will know by tomorrow afternoon if the stain is back so please check to make sure."

By giving them this information I've covered all my bases: I let them know that I will clean their car as best as I can while doing it safely, I let them know that not everything can be removed, I let them know that sometimes stains reappear (especially if the car is filthy!!) and I also tactfully let them know that if there is a problem they need to inform me about it ASAP.

thanks apollo. Thats what i told him..I told him that i will only use products I feel safe in using because I know they wont harm the carpet fibers. I would rather have a stain stay than have to buy you a new seat because I damaged yours. Some stains have been there so long that they will not come out SAFELY...its your car and you may take all the risks you want with it...but I wont take those risks. He replied back with..."well they sell it over the counter....its not going to harm anything." I used over the counter acid type cleaners and non acid cleaners as an example..both get the wheels clean but one can hurt in the long run.

I am going to take a photo before I touch the car, during the process, and then after. Its little black stickers...so I am just going to steam them or heat them up and remove them then rewax...the whole thing will be photographed to cover my bases.

Punch this guy in the face so hard that his girlfriend would feel it!!! He is nothing but a scumbag, and you dont need his friendship end of story

Ive had some bad customers but this guy is really something. Distance yourself for sure...never again..dont even walk by his car or he might accuse you of rubbing up against it and scratching it and demanding a full polish detail...would you really be surprised??

Well, if they didn't do that, it's because it's illegal. You can fire someone for messing up, but you can't take back some of their pay or "charge" them for the cost of the foulup, damaged goods, etc.

Yeah, not normally in an office job setting. But there are exceptions.

In sales, it's called a charge back. Happens all the time. If you promised someone something you couldn't deliver at the time of the sale, and the people make a stink about it. It normally comes out of the salesman's pay.(If it made a decent profit) I've seen it a bunch of times when I was in the car business. I imagine it still happens. lol

Yes sir, this car/suv has pen stripes, 3 free oil changes, or this car has floor mats (and it doesn't) you get the idea. They don't take money back from you. They just deduct your paycheck, or get you on your next deal.

JpiRally, good for you.

wow friends like that................. u might consider telling him to u will get back at him in 4mths for that sticker removal, me myself i wouldnt touch his car unless u want more drama

I just found this thread, and it's probably too late to put in my 2 cents but here it goes:

1. Don't touch his car again. No sticker removal, no winter treatments, ect.

2. After 4 months, it's absurd for them to ask for a refund. Especially since you mentioned that the fiance was thrilled when she first saw the car afterwards.

3. No full refund PERIOD - spots on the carpet make up less than 1% of the car.

4. After he got personal with you, NO refund whatsoever. You said you might be able to work things out with him, but after that, he blew it.

5. The next time you detail someone's car, make sure they know that you will do everything you can to fix something, but no car is 100% correctable. And make them look at everything before they leave so if they disapprove of something, you'll know right away, not after 4 months.

6. This guy is a total slime ball. If it took the fiance 4 months to notice that she didn't like something, she can't hate it that much. And he said that she thought the car looked really bad afterwards? But she seemed happy after she got it back? That means they are lying.

Well....we spoke today and this is how it went down. I agreed to remove the dealer sticker on the trunk lid and wax that corner. Nothing else....the convo jumped a bit but this is how it went..

- He said the car looked bad when they got it back because of the 2 stains on the floor mat and the one on the bottom of the seat from the barf. I mentioned chemicals, how I clean and the level I go too to not only ensure the cloth is not damaged, but that the stain comes out. If I feel the stain is there I wont risk damaging fabric to remove it. I also said it would have been nice to know at the time, not 4 months later. I also then asked what specifically they didn't like..it was the stains in the floor mat and that was it.

- He then said that I was going on vacation right after I did their car, so I wanted the money and just wanted to head out of town and I did a shoty job as a result. I said dude...it was a $150. I would normally charge $350+ for the detail you got. If it was about the money I would have charged you full price, but you're a friend and therefore I didn't. He then told me the detail job wasn't worth $350 and the place next door charges $100 for a detail. I said go there that's fine...but you know its a car wash that employs HS students to do their details and it will only take them 2-4 hours max. Big difference of what can get cleaned in 10 hours of labor difference. I also told him the level of product used there and what I use is different and how its applied and cured is very different. I also told him me going on vacation has nothing to do with his detail job or my detailing a s whole. a job is a job and I take immense pride in my work and therefore the vacation had no bearing.

- He then said that he thought I cut corners o finish up faster. I then got heated...and showed my disgust. I turned it onto him and said this..."Dude..seriously? This is NOT about your car now is it? That is personal. In 3 years have you even known me to cut corners or sham someone let alone a FRIEND? If you want to make this personal we can, but that's ridiculous that you would even bring that up. If I was cutting corners would I have noticed 3 screws missing on the top of her engine cover? Would I have noticed the dealer caused scratches on the front bumper under the lower lip? What about the 7 dental floss picks under the seats? If I was cutting corners none of that stuff would have been noticed.

In the end..I said look dude. you want the sticker off I will do that, but as for a refund thats not happening. I debunked every theory he had with facts and offered him to come detail my next car with me..he declined, and so yeah...last job I ever do for a friend.

Unreal. He's a douchebag, end of story. Don't feel bad about it - I only say that because I can tell you do and it isn't worth it.

Check your PM box, I bet it is filled with douchebags upset that you compared them to this guy. :xyxthumbs

No way would I touch this guys car again even if it is just to remove a sticker, and as I mentioned before no refunds.

He insulted your work ethic, integrity, your pride, and most of all he insulted you.

Seems like his wife went price shopping after everthing was done and saw that he can get a "detail" for less at the corner swirl carwash, and is now trying to recoup some money even though he obviously does not understand what is involved in the detail process.

Pictures are a good way to show befores and afters to avoid problems.

It is always funny to me how a woman will spend hundreds of dollars on her hair at the hair dresser, but you ask for a few hundred dollars for hours of your hard labor to repair a years worth of neglect on their daily drive car they ***** ***** *****.

It's entirely possible that the poor guy is just trying to get his psycho woman to stop nagging him!

That still gives him no right to degrade his friend. It's not the OP's fault that this person doesn't have the fortitude to stand up to his woman, if that is indeed the case.

Thats terrible... I get a lot done for free by a great friend... he's tinted 4 cars for me, we fully dynomatted 2 and he's never got a dime for it. I even try to say "dude this is free it doesn't have to be perfect its good enough there" and he refuses that as an answer needing to make it perfect. Friends like that are hard to find! I feel guilty all I can offer in return is to fix his PC when needed, but I spose thats not a bad deal either! I won't work on PC's for other friends anymore though - per the rest of this thread :D
