Current storm..

Sorry RaskyR1 to , incorrectly, imply that ALL body shop personnel do bad workmanship. Obviously your father does not, nor do you.

That said, we Autopians have viewed the postings and pictures of more than one "bad" body shop job that Autopian-quality detailers have fixed. I am in awe at what these detailers do, but perhaps more disappointed in what some body shops consider "acceptable".

Lonnie -
I and a lot of other people here know - Exactly - what you mean..

Lucky for me, I started learning as a young lad how to finish correctly, and never knew in my life that swirls were supposed to be acceptable at some places, because they were Never Acceptable in any of the places I worked..

I think it all comes down to that word - Production -
All Shops that are any good and perhaps not so good but have a lot of business anyway, have to run a bunch of cars in and out of the shop - Every Week - there are no exceptions...

The more people that work at the Shop, the more cars have to get in and out to realistically even make payroll sometimes...

There are a lot of bad habits that have perpetuated themselves through this Industry for as long as I can remember and I'm in my 60's so that is a long time that I have personally seen a lot of good and a lot of bad techniques going on there with the Rotary, the materials used, the lack of any cleaning program for pads, and some of the worst towels in the world used to wipe off..

For some reason, a lot of places use a "Rep" who comes by and sells stuff to the Shop and for decades nothing ever changes...

As with everything else that never changes for decades, the same bad buffing techniques are passed down for decades it seems like, and no one really questions or decides that perhaps we can look at changing a few things..

The old adage - "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" also helps keep the good and the not-so-good processes going on and on..
Everyone is at the mercy of the Boss/Owner who may not give a hoot about how it really looks but as long as its straight and shiny, that is all that matters...

Thank Goodness that there are still a few - perhaps a lot of really great Shops out there that try really hard to do great work at the Body end as well as the Painting/Finishing end !

I still remember far back enough when Real BodyMen used Lead to finish the repair after they used a bunch of different hammers and dollies to work that heavy duty metal used back then to almost perfection..

And after all this, we can all be so Thankful for the Shops that do the best work from the beginning to the end and give their Clients as good a result as can be had, because if there were None, we as Detailers would Never be done, right ? :)

Nizmo -

Glad you are prepared and think about this stuff before you have to use it...
Hope you get to work and home safely...
We will be thinking about you and all the others that have to be out in that stuff..

Thanks man! You can never be too prepared. Last Sunday morning it was 1-3" and twords that evening it was double that. Working out of town I didn't want to be surprised. The blower is electric start so incase I'm ever stuck in New York, mother can use it.

Woke up a little while ago to discover new amounts are 16"-24". I really don't think anybody is going anywhere, it's 8"-12" just tonight, and another 8"-12" Saturday. Going into town and stocking up on beer and peanut butter. :D

No worries, I didn't take it that way. ;)

I just remember every winter when it snowed how busy he got, still gets....white gold! :)

Cold here too.........

Having spent 1 year at the top of the world standing up to the Soviet missile launch threat, can pretty much say there will NEVER be as much snow Anywhere as there is up there...

Oh yeah, above the Arctic Circle, that is the place where all the cold comes from that eventually gets down to the USA, right ?

It was so cold up there that all the Dodge Power Wagon Trucks with fulltime 4wd and huge chains, were plugged in and you NEVER shut them off at night...
All vehicles up there were plugged into motor block warmers and ran all day and night to keep them from freezing...

When the continual below zero temps came ALL the way up to 0, Zero degrees Fahrenheit, we would go outside in shorts and T-shirts, because it was so HOT....:)

You never went out in the snowstorms alone - had to be tied to someone else, in case something happened..

Sleepwise it was a nightmare - 6 months the sun went in a circle around the sky, 12 noon and 12 midnight were not very different
The other 6 months, it was pitch black..

And I thought Minot North Dakota in late December was bad ; where you were is on a different level of cold.

HOLY CRAP!! We got hammered. Got out at work at 10pm. It started here around 3pm. It's still snowing. I cant even guess how much so far. Took a friend to work since his car broke down. Trip home was BAD. People with cars were getting stuck in the lot! Trip home took 1.5 hours. Usually takes 45 min. I was shocked to see they did mot even touch the roads!! The hi way and roads up here at home were not even treated or plowed! One thing i can attest, the XTERRA is a tank. Never slipped or gave me doubts at any time. Glad TO BE HOME!

We have a few furries and maybe an 1-2 inches of mostly sleet. It is supposed to be 40 tomorrow.

We got at least 14 inches so far. Round 1 of snow removal is done. With the wind I feel like I accomplished nothing.

We ended up with about 13 inches. Though we dodged a lot of the snow the flooding at the beaches was wicked.

UGH! Just now got the driveway cleared. I was forced to work yesterday, So I was only able to get some of it yesterday morning before I hitched a ride. Nothing like waking up at 4am to snowblow and work a 12hr shift coming home at 10PM. About 24"-30" with 3' and 4' drifts.

I cleared this porch to get out at about 8:30 yesterday morning. This is what I found coming home at 10pm.

Same here, way too much snow for a single storm. I was running out of places to push it with my plow. Snowblower's had the advantage with this one! I'm thankful we never lost power either. Kept the stove burning at full tilt all day just incase:
