Crazy Detailer

Ok, funny story.

I was on my way to subway, while turning in the parking lot I saw a NEW Aston Martin in traffic. I freaked out :scared: and but was disappointed that the light turned green; however, he wound up catching the red light. I parked, took a business card, and dodged traffic :bolt to go give it to him. I said "Very nice ride, sir. You needa detail job just call me up!" He said thanks and looked he had been violated. If I was him and someone did that, I would have the impression he is passionate about what he does and is good at it. Say what you want, in my area of town I don't see Aston Martins or many REALLY NICE cars much, so I gotta take every advantage that I can. I feel kinda retarded now since I did that, but its gonna feel a lot better when im detailing it. :woot2:

If you dont look like a thug or a gang member then I guess is a good approach lol. Hopefully you business card has a web address so he can see some of your work.

some people just don't like to be approached I think..

Pretty much. I generally only offer cards "cold" to people I'm acquainted with.

Otherwise, I put them under my wipers when my car is in a car show. :nixweiss

Personally I think pulling a stunk like that kind of makes you look desperate as if you've never seen or worked on a exotic or high end car before.....

No offense, just being honest.:bolt

I've always wanted to approach random strangers with sick cars (but in need of a detail), but never do because I don't want to seem invasive or rude. If the conversation of detailing ever comes up, I'll do the whole "give and take" approach, where I give the clinet a compliment on his car, and take it away by telling him "what shame its looking soo dull", or something along those lines. I got that tip from another member and has really been key to hooking lots of clients into knowing they need a detail.

Yeah, no offense meant but if someone approached me like that (in traffic) I'd just rip up the card.

I have been pretty wary about using techniques such as this. I generally don't like to approach people cold, rather I just pop a business card in their door. On the other hand, that doesn't generate business either...

I had a mobile car washer (beat up dirty van with "CAR WASH" on the side) stop me once while I was washing my car on my driveway to give me a card and proceed to tell me "Give me a call when you want it done professionally"... I said "Thanks", and put the card in my wallet. I tossed the card after he left and laughed about it. The guy meant no trouble, he just saw me as a potential client, but I can see how other people would take it the wrong way.

i can understand all the feedback yall are giving me and appreciate your honesty, but my dad is a insurance agent and he always tells me, "You automatically get a 'No' answer if you don't go talk to them/give them a card. But, if you do then your chances have greatly risen that you will get that job."

My dad has no college degree and is making a pretty damn good living from not finishing college. Also, everytime I go somewhere he always introduces me to someone and talks for like 20 min. :hairpull After, I ask him who that was and hes like "Just a client..."

What I'm saying here is that my dad is pretty good at what he does, and I'm in the same boat as him. I've got to try and sell my service to receive business. So, whatever my dad does works for him, so I'm willing to try anything he tells me in order to be as successful at what he does as him.

Just what I think of it...

Sounds as if you understand how important face to face sales are. You did the right thing by approaching the guy with the Ferrari. He was probably shocked that you approached him. He will definitely remember the encounter and may call you in the future. As your dad said, if you never approach a person you are guaranteed not to get the sale. I just wish I had the personality to do that type of thing more often.

Ive been in direct sales for over 20 yrs. and your Dad is right! Keep in mind the 3' rule. You talk to everyone within 3' of you about your services. Ask and you will receive, dont ask and you get shi$$$.

I had a simaalr experience last week.. I had the Mustang out and stopped at a convienience store to get a bottle of water. A "mobile detailing" van pulled up along side of Mustang as I was coming out of the store.

He gave the car a once over and said "if you're interetsed, I can make that look 100% better... here's my card...

His van, while fairly clean, was a poster child for buffer trails and holograms! :o

I see positive and negative responses to what you did on here. In my opinion, this is what I call a "Sum-Gain" move. This is apposed to a "Sum-Loss" move.

What I mean by this is you only had to gain from doing what you did. It doesn't matter if it was the best way to approach a customer or not. Doing what you did was better than not doing it because you put yourself in a position of enrichment. You learned from the experience as well as gave yourself an opporuntity (debatably small or large) to get business. Maybe he is very unlikely to call, however he is infinitely more unlikely to call you if you hadn't gave him your card.

Also, if you did this 10-20 times, you would probably get some business. Given the small amount of time of time it took you to do what you did, I'd say it was well worth your time even if you don't get business this one time.

I see that maybe you felt embarrassed by what you did and other people seem to be saying things to add to your embrassement. Doing things to enrich yourself despite your fears is called "courage." What you did was courageous and I think you should be commended for that.

I have been doing this lately on cars in parking lots, ect. and have gotten calls. Got a guy who said would call to schedule his C6 Corvette in for a detail. :heelclick
