Craftsman 6 inch oribital buffer acceptable?

Hello everyone. I'm just getting started into the "real" detailing of cars. Before I found this board, I've was using a lot of off the shelf products which didn't please me for more than a week. Since all our cars are parked outside, the shine would be gone in a week.

Anyways, I currently have a Craftsman 6 inch orbital buffer which has saved me time. I wanted to know if this is an acceptable orbital buffer for use with the Klasse or Blackfire products (I plan to buy Klasse or Blackfire in a few weeks).

Also, I have 4 terry cloth bonnets. Should this be enough? What else should I buy for my 6" orbital buffer?

TIA!

Oliver

I would try and get some foam bonnets for it if you can. They are much better for applying products than the terry ones.

Hi Oliver is THIS the one you are talking about? I'm sure it will save you some labor. The Craftsman model that I linked to has a pretty small motor. It is 1/2 an amp and the PC 7424 is 3.7 amps.

Mine looks similar to that, but mine is the 6 inch model. Would my .50 amp motor be enough to do a great detail job? I'm hoping to save my money to buy the Klasse or Blackfire products.

That's a tough question to answer without comparing. I live in Pleasanton which isn't that far from SF. You're welcome to come by on some weekend and compare the machines side by side. Then you could decide if it is worth it for the PC or not. :)

btw THIS is the page that I found with the different Craftsman brand polishers.

Thanks for the invite Short Cut. I'll let you know when I plan on doing a comparison. I actually bought my Craftsman 6 inch orbital from the Mountain View Sears. I asked the sales clerk for the smallest buffer they had and he went into their storage area and found a 6 inch buffer. I was actually surprised that a 6" Craftsman existed. I went to that same web page you were on and 7" was the smallest they had at that time.

Thanks again!

Man this thread was freaky for me since this weekend I busted out the old craftsman 9" orbital I got from my dad about 15 years ago. I was looking at Sears to get some parts for it since the polishing head assy seems to be broke. I actually have the original manual dated 5-1982.

Darn thing shakes so bad you cannot hang onto it. I figured the head assy was out of balance. I was trying to polish some glass and lets just say the orbital was put away quickly and I used my hand orbital!

Good point GMN. The photos in my signature link are all examples of what you can do by hand. They were taken before I go my PC. The PC does make a difference, to me, the wife just smiles and says yep it looks really shiney honey. :p So I guess what I'm saying is that you may notice the difference but most people would not.

I have a simmilar Orbital, mine is a "Champlain" I got at SAM's Club REALLY cheap.

Since I have it I have used it to apply AIO with foam pads you can buy at Wal-Mart with very good results (IMO).

My thinking is to use what I have for a while, and when the thing breaks, get the Porter Cable. :bounce
