Crack In Windshield!!

Sad story. My girlfriend just bought a new Toyota RAV4 and just yesterday she called me crying. A rock flew up on the highway and nick'd her window pretty good. There is a dime size crack that is spider-web'n a bit in the lower part of her front window.

Questions:

Is there anything that can be done to save the window, from further spider-webing?

Is there anyway to cover this up, so its not a constant reminder to her?

Lastly, there isn't a repair i can do, how much will it cost at a shop to repair?

Thanks.

Check with her insurance company, many will replace glass with no problem.

Good luck!

Before going to your insurance company, call a few auto glass shops in your area. Some competative places will replace some windshields for very reasonable prices.

Don't know what her deductable is, and don't know what impact a claim will have on future insurance rates...but it may be cheaper in the long run to just replace it out of pocket.

Definitely check with a glass repair place first. They will usually charge $50-$100 to fix a little thing like this. Your insurance will cover it under comprehensive, but the problem is that it will be reported to CLUE (www.choicetrust.com), which is basically a huge database that tracks insurance claims. Insurance companies check that database and charge premiums accordingly depending on claim experience. It will be "chargable" for 3 years and will stay on the record forever. Just isn't worth it, especially since your deductible is likely at least $100.

do auto glass places have any success with this type of thing?? Is their any repair other than replacing it completely? And how much are we talking for a new windshield or repair at a shop?

Repairs usually cost about $50-$100 each crack. The repairs are done by usually drilling out a little bit of the crack with a dremel type tool and then it's filled with an epoxy of some time. There's some sort of computer cover they put over it and it creates a vacuum or something. Not sure on what it actually does. I had a crack repaired about 3 or 4 years ago on my car and you can hardly tell it's there (looks like a really fine spec on the windshield now). My wife has 2 cracks on the windshield we're about to repair also.

A new windshield can run anywhere from a couple hundred to over a thousand, depending on the model/make. My biggest concern about a windshield replacement is the seal. I have seen too many that start to leak after a little while. Unless it's either not fixable or would be way too expensive, I choose repair over replace.

I had it happen to me recently. It can be repaired/contained, but the mark will always remain. Basically they fill it with some sort of resin to prevent it from spreading.

Like others said, cost is between $50 and $100. If the chip/crack is not taken care of early, it will spread and then the entire windshield will have to be replaced.

My experience with having chips repaired has been pretty good, and is usually just $50 to $100. I don't have any experience with having cracks repaired.

Windshield replacement does vary depending on make/model of the car, the brand of replacement glass, and how competative the local market is. A friend had his windshield replaced recently with a PPG brand windshield for $225 (less than his insurance deductable).

The times I have seen replacements leak, have been when they were not allowed to cure long enough. My brother-in-law had to drive his within 15 minutes of having the glass replaced (they did tape over the seal) and it started leaking within a few days.

Check your insurance policy. Many policies have a $0 deductable on comprehensive. Most insurance companies do NOT raise your rates based on comprehensive claims. Everytime I get a crack I call my insurance company and they send someone out to repair it right in my driveway. It costs me nothing. I've done it numerous times and they've never raised my rates based on those claims.

I had the same thing happen to me last night. I was driving along and then heard a loud POP! that nearly made me jump out of my skin. I thought it hit the top of the car, but this morning I saw the dime sized spider crack on the windshield :(

I have a $500 deductible, but State Farm is sending me to a glass place for windshield repair. Apparently it won't cost me anything, State Farm picks up the cost. However if I have to eventually get it replaced it will cost me out of pocket, as my windshield would be less than my deductible. So I guess I'll try the free repair first!

It's aggravating as hell, you work so hard to keep your car looking spotless and now this. But hey, what u gonna do? Hopefully it will make it less noticeable.

I feel your girlfriend's pain. It's depressing!

well i should have updated this story, it gets interesting..

she paid $45 to get the window repaired. Then exactly 2 days later, we get hit with 9 inches of snow. The next day she gets in the car, heats it up and BAM huge huge huge split in the windshield. I mean across the entire windshield. The autoglass company used the $45 + $100 off the price of replacing the windshield, which came out to a very nice price. I don't trust these glass repair places anymore.

Man that sucks! I am so sick of this winter weather. I'm afraid that my cracked spot will do the same thing...how does the new windshield look? As good as the original one?

Sorry to hear about that.

yeah looks the same, her only complaint is her mirror is almost perminatly fixed in one spot. but, she's a girl, who knows what the problem really is ;P

If the crack is longer then 1 inch then your going to need a new glass.

I recommend safelite auto glass. I used to work there and 90% of the employees actually care about their work.

be sure to keep the chip area clean until it can be looked at. place a piece of scotch tape over ;)

we used safelite auto. I didn't want to say the name of the company. The crack was measured at 1 cm. It was more of a chip.

My girl friendâ€â„¢s car was hit with a small â€Ëœstone chipâ€â„¢ on her windshield on the way to work and she had it repaired (110+tax) she asked me (after sheâ€â„¢d had it done, trying to be all independent I guess) âہ“What should I do, Iâ€â„¢ve seen a glass company at the beach that say they can repair and there would be no need to replace it)

I said to call the insurance (we have comp ins.) and they will pay for a replacement. Anyway, she arrived home all pleased with her repair, she got out of the car and closed the door, with a little more force than usual......while I cleaned up the glass, she phoned the insurance company
