well my GF just bought me my porter cable, she didnt buy any accesories but thats ok.

im basically planning on getting some lc pads, i hear that orange pad may not need as much because ssr products can be used nicely on white pads depending on the jobs you are doing.

so im ordering only 1 orange pad, 2 white pads and a finishing pads, of course ssr 2.5 and ssr1.

on a side note, lol....my chaftsman buffer on max speed is like slower than the slow speed on the PC, im in love!

i usually deal with friends car that usually has water spots and swirl marks as well as etching and marring. so ill practice on my super van to get it down =).

--my questions--

*there was a tutorial with a video on how to use the PC....any one have that link?

*anyways mine came with a standard white pad and the counter weight. it says use with only 5'' pads. now i been reading and not many people said anything, but i may go with 6'' pads, do i have to purchase a counter weight for a 6'' pad?

Don't forget to replace the original backing plate by a Lake Country 6" Dual Action Molded Urethane Backing Plate.

I would give it a try with the 5" counterweight. The worst that might happen is that the vibration will be unconfortable. Some people don't mind other do.

You can allways change later.

There are several tutorials on youtube.com. Put "porter-cable" in search box.

I have a 5" counterweight in my PC and it does fine using a 5" backing Plate and 6" to 7" pads. Like chutney mentioned you can always swap it out for a 6" counterweight later if you think it's needed. You can pick them up for about $3.00 at Exceldetail (he also sells some nice backing plates if you need one):

Counterweights

I use the PC on speed 6 a lot and have never had a bad vibration problem. Good luck and happy polishing!

i played with my pc the other day, i do notice a bit of vibration, enough to irritate my hand...i think im going to try a 6'' counter weight cant beat the price.

thanks guys!

Is there a counterweight for the 4" pads?
The only counterweight that I've used is a 5" and it works fine for all the pad and BP sizes that I use: 3.5" BP with 4" pads and 5" BP with my 6" - 7" pads. Others have switched to a 6" counterweight and it seems to work fine with the 4" pads too.

I do have a 6" counterweight but I've never had a reason to put it in and I run my PC at speed 6 a lot. Others report that a 6" counterweight has helped, so since they are so cheap you might want to pick up the size that you don't have just to have on hand.

Edit: the only counterweights available for the PC are the 5" or 6". If you have a vibration problem with 4" pads then I'd try a 5" weight if you're currently running a 6" weight. Be sure and make sure your pad is centered, if not it will amplify any vibrations you might have.

I was about to ask the same question too :D.

I have a 6" C/W on my PC, over the weekend I was using the LC CCS 4" pads and man it vibrated like hell. In any event, enquire mind wants to know...Is there's a 4" c/w for the pc?

there are NO C/W made for (sized for) foam pads!

they are sized for a price of sanding paper stuck to a PC BP

so the 5" & 6" are close but not perfect either will work fine

I have use both and do not notice a difference

and no ther is no 4" C/W

Lots of vibration is normal in a PC. My hands definitely hurt after a long detail, and I use the 6" counterweight for all pads. I find the 6" CW to make the machine run a little smoother at all speeds, but that's my opinion.

The 5" CW is OEM in the PC 7424, and the 6" CW is OEM in the PC 7336, but the 7336 is very hard to find since Lowe's discontinued it.

This is a little OT, but the new Ultimate Detailing Machine that is about to be released by The Perfect Shine is supposed to operate MUCH smoother than the regular PC.

What should be used with Edge 2K pads since they don't use a backing plate but are thicker in dimension?

I put on the 6" counterweight when I purchased my PC (it came with it) and noticed moderate vibration when I spent 22 hrs polishing cars this past weekend but I haven't used the 5" as a comparison.

Is the counterweight based on having a backing plate or based on the diameter and weight of the pads?

the counterweight is based on a peice of sanding paper stuck to a BP

the 6" is about as good as you can get

I'm surprised someone hasn't developed a counterweight specifically for pads since they are so popular and typically have a larger diameter, more mass, and more weight than a piece of sandpaper.
