Cost to build a garage?

Hey guys! I'm going to buy my first home this summer and have been looking at so many houses I have a headache. A garage was one of the main things I was looking at but now I'm toying with the idea of finding something with a level lot that I could build a garage on. One place I looked at had a finished basement and a 2 car detached garage. Because the garage was detached, the basement was HUGE . The garage was a 2 car and was prolly around 20x20. It was unfinished and all I saw in it was potential. But I digress...

Back to my original question. About how much would it cost to build a garage? If I end up building something, I'd like it to be pretty big (but no bigger than 40x40). I'm just looking for a ballpark figure and I figured someone on here might have already done something like this. Any help would be appreciated!!

It depends on if you would hire contractors to do this, or just buy the plans and materials and a couple cases of beer and get a team of buddies to do it yourself.

I know up here in Canada, Home Hardware (I think) sells a do-it-yourself package for a 1.5 car detached garage for around $2000 canadian, includes plans and materials. They only have the one size/style though.

We'll its hard to say on the cost as it all depends on what materials you chose and the type of construction. You could roughly consider around 70 to 80 dollars a square foot to begin with. It could come out alot less or alot more. Wow a 40x40 foot space is going to be awesome. If you could afford to span that 40 foot length with some lightweight trusses you would have a clear unabstructed garage floor. Make sure to check with the local planning regulations on any restrictions there might be. Good luck!

Those kits look real good. I think they have a few other sizes as well. All you need to do is get a company to pour the foundation and you are good to go. My old neighbor built his garage from one of those kits and it took him and his buddies a long weekend to complete after the concrete was ready.

My brother in-law had some Amish guys build a garage for him..kind of barn style. No electric, no water, and a gravel floor at first. He added all that stuff when he could afford to. It looks pretty good.

There's some company near Youngstown that advertises 'One Day Garages'.

You can also check out pre-fab steel bldgs, although they aren't very nice to look at in your backyard.

The grand parents have a cement block garage. You can cover it with siding or stucco.

As others have said, the cost is all materials and type of construction and their are many options.

Good Luck!

To be more specific, I'll need a contractor to build it and pour the foundation but the rest I can do. Insulate and sheetrock the walls, lighting, etc. I'm just looking for a ballpark figure so I have an idea.

Edit: There wouldn't be a hurry to get it finished either. I have a car cover for the Mustang and my daily driver sits without a cover. Once the frame is built, I'll be able to work on the rest of it as time and $$ allows.
