Corvette Clearcoat

So I attempted to polish up my newly purchase 07 Corvette Z06 in black over the weekend. I tried three passes of Megs 85 along with a 5.5" Lake Country Yellow via PC7424 and I only received about 50-60% paint correction. I am assuming that these:

Foamed Wool 6.5 x 1 Thick Polishing / Buffing Pad

Are a more aggresive pad to use with the Megs 85? After two passes with the PC I would expect some decent correction. I cant conceive more than three passes (Id be here forever.)

Is the PC even strong enough for the GM clear?

You will be their forever. maybe give the Kb method a try or get some M105 &205 from megs along with the Kb method or get a flex or rotary Pc on Vette clear is a long process.I try the wool pads you have just do one panel at a time and so what if it takes you a week or 2 to finish. You have any white pads to finish off with if not i get a few and maybe a black also to finish off the black paint nice and clear. Oh and good luck just take your time.I am sure more will chime in when they see the post.

It was my impression that the M85 and M105 where similar in their cutting, only that the M105 finished up in less than half the time?

I may jump to a flex for the forced rotation and maybe rock some of those purple foam pads.... I have almost all the LC pads (5.5" yellow, orange, and white, along with the 6.5" Orange White, Blue and Blacks) Im coming from an 06 Infiniti G35 so that paint was very workable using only the orange pads.

So real question is if I spring for the Flex along with M105 (assumingly superior to my stock of M85 on hand) and rock the purple foam, will I see noticeable time savings along with 90% correction in maximum 2 iterations of M105?

(Im amazingly leary of jumping to a Rotary, A. nothing to practice on and B. I wouldnt dare touch my vette with it being so inexperienced)

Thanks again.

dont answer in two threads...delete the other one

anyway, I have a corvette to hand next week monday for a one day detail, and its going to consist of 105, SIP, FPII, glaze (owner requested RMG) and pinnacle souveran paste! Its a show car, so I am HOPING I wont need the 105 and I can just buzz around it with SIP, but with the harder clear, thats probably a long shot! rotary and PFW, or a meguiars yellow wool, and 105 would be my go to if the paint is pretty hammered

Just orders 4"PFW's and 32 oz. of M105. Well see what happens with this combo. They smaller / more agressive pad and polish should be better for me. Ill let you know results.

Just FYI, a PFW pad will not cut more than a yellow foam cutting pad, at least not with a DA polisher. However, using either PFW or yellow foam with 105 should get you great results. Follow with 205/white or 205/gray and you'll be impressed to say the least. Corvettes have VERY hard paint - some of the hardest I've ever worked with and 105/205 always does a great job for me, unless the paint is REALLY bad.

Hmmm. Well I have 5.5" yellow, so the 4" on a 3.5" backing plate will be a little more concentrated. I am really hoping the M105 will cut alot better than the M85, since I already have M83 and M80 as well I will finish with one of those

Corvettes have incredibly hard clearcoat, and the composite body panels don't heat up like a metal bodied car. They take a long time, and are almost always a 3 stage macine polish starting with wool and powergloss, then SIP and Super Finish.

you just have to take your time with this clear. my 07's clear is "bullet proof". you can get a great result. :xyxthumbs

Just finishing up on a Black '06 C6, it's taken me about 13hrs so far and I still have the final polish to do. This was with 105/205 and a rotary. This was pretty bad paint, bad enough where it still has a lot of RIDS that were just better to leave alone since it's a DD. I just don't see how a PC can do it some serious time involved.

If I may hijack the thread real quick, for all you out there that have worked these vettes before, how does ultrafina work on the clear? The 205 finished down real well so all I need a to remove a few light holos and up the gloss. I was going to just try out the UF but since I saw this thread i figured I'd get some extra knowledge.

Make sure your surface is as close to perfect as you want because the Ultrafina can hide some defects for quite some time. For finishing I prefer Menzerna 85rd or 106FA.

Well Ill see what I can accomplish given the tools at hand. Not sounding like a bright forcast if 105 and a rotary arent pulling their weight. UGH.

PPG and BASF make CeramicClear that is used on Mercedes, BMW, Corvette, and other high-end cars. It was designed to offer long term gloss and durability. It is very hard, can still be damaged by keys but not nearly as easy as with regular Clear coats. Damage from UV radiation, acid rain and salt is eliminated. Menzerna claims to have developed special polishes for use on these super hard clearcoats that will remove defects with no loss of surface gloss. Might be worth a look if you still have problems.

Are you sure Corvette (or GM for that matter) is using Ceramic Clears?

On a side note:

I know C5 paint can be known to be on the harder side of the spectrum, but IMHO C6 clear isn't 1/2 as bad.

No, I'm not dead on sure, but they were mentioned in several articles I read on CeramicClear. I suppose you could check with GM, but it sounds like that's what Spin117 is dealing with.
