I am interested in this as well. The ones I have used from Black and Decker etc really haven`t been all that great.
I don`t know if you consider this "hand-held" or not, but I use one similar to this 18/20V MAX* Cordless/Corded Wet-Dry Vacuum - DCV581H | DEWALT. It`s not super-powerful, but it`s what I use on my personal vehicles 95% of the time.

It gets the job done for your regularly maintained vehicles. I use it all over the place (car, home, garage), since it`s so portable!

I`ve been using an earlier version of that one for years around the house and in the car. For light duty use it`s fine, but it`ll never replace my shop vac for extended cleaning jobs.

Only with short haired dogs. But a friend of mine who has longer hair dogs swears by the mini motorized head that comes with it.
