Convince me to buy a rotary!!

Beau- Yeah, Audi clear is why I bought a rotary after over twenty years of not needing one.

Rotary combos I've had success with on Audi clear:

Scratches- Cutting pad and 1Z Ultra (if this won't get it I live with it), Note that 1Z polishes are used at low speeds by rotary.

Mild scratches- Cutting and/or polishing pad with 3M PI-III RC (05933)

Lighter Marring- Polishing pad with 1Z PP or 3M PI-III MG

I then follow up with a Cyclo. I only use the rotary to remove marring that I can't get with milder methods. So yeah, if you can swing the cost of admission, get 'em both.

The big green pad (for the PC) that you mentioned on another thread doesn't, IMO have enough cut for any use on Audi clear except for applying a LSP. Heh heh, a Benz on the assembly line is one thing, a marred Audi in the real world is something different ;)

Bill D- I dunno, it's easy for me to take care of cars that don't get too messed up in the first place (the S8), and I'm not trying to fix everything on my wife's A8 either....The time I *did* have to fix the S8 it took a long, long time :o But I couldn't have done it without the rotary.

GoodnClean- I guess it's a matter of what you want to put your time and effort into. In my case, I just don't have a *practical/functional* reason to truly master the rotary so I'm not gonna spend my time doing that. I can use it to get things to where the Cyclo can finish up, and that's good enough for me. I have a great appreciation of/respect for people who can *really* use one, but then I appreciate a lot of skills that I don't feel the need to cultivate myself. Life is short, how do *you* want to spend it?

And a customer's car would not be the thing to use a rotary on until/unless you really *knew* that you would't mess up. Just my opinion...

Turbomangt- I'll be interested to hear how you like the Dewalt DA, given that you already have the Cyclo. What prompted you to get it?

Hi Accumulator, thanks for the input. An A8/S8 would be a tall job for sure.

I used that big green pad for Menzerna Final Polish right after I took delivery of my Audi; so it was "factory fresh". I just wanted gloss and wasn't looking for defect removal.

Yesterday I was using 3M PI-III RC (05933) with a yellow cutting pad and my PC. It was getting the work done; albeit slowly.

What polishes do you like that have more bite than PI-III? I like PI-III because I just follow it up with All-In-One so I don't worry about hazing.

I had an opportunity to try one last year. I liked the fact it had a heavier motor than the DAPC, witnessed some serious paint correction done with it. The only thing about the cyclo I wish it had, was a variable speed. The Dewal;t offers the best of both worlds if i remember it does have variable speed. This machine could be the one that covers all the bases. time will tell. Gary

Good point...

TurbomanGT- OK, I see. Let us know how you like it if you get one. You might wanna try one out first hand before you spend the money though (if you can). I hear you on a speed control for the Cyclo, but there aren't all that many times I'd really need to change it. Perhaps I've just grown accustomed to it.

Beau- For Cyclo/PC work, I'll only go to 1Z Ultra. But I *think* (no first hand experience) that Hi-Temp's Medium Cut might be worth a try. In my case, if I can't do it with the Ultra I get out the rotary.

OK on your use of the big green pad. It just doesn't float my boat so I don't even use it for stuff like LSPs, just me...

Well, I finally did it and bought a rotary!! old school Black and Decker rotary.

My neighbor about 2 houses down from me was having an estate auction. More stuff than I ever imagined!! There lied an old B&D 7" rotary polisher/sander. I don't know how old it is but just from looking at it, it's gotta be more than 10 yrs old. It works perfectly! Specs are below

B&D Rotary 7" polisher/sander

Green/Black

2 speed trigger 1850RPM/2400RPM

6.0 amp motor

ok here's some pics. I know the pics look like it's blue but it's actually green. You guys might like how the backing plate is setup. Thanks,,,,,,,,,91
