Conversation with "Worlds worse old school hack"!

I'll jump on the wagon.... I'd say he is a hack. Anyone that is not open to discussion of techniques IS a hack. I'm always open to learn new ways. Once you think you know everything is when its too late.

To the defense of the OP I have had a couple of conversations, not wait arguments with the person that he is talking about on a BMW site. It really doesn't matter what aspect of detailing you are talking about with him, it ends in his know it all attitude. He is incredibly abrasive if you don't agree with him or question him about a given practice. IMO he is WAY quick to grab at sand paper as a solution to getting a decent swirl free finish. In the 30 plus years that I have detailed cars, there has been few times that I have felt wet sanding was the answer.

The guy does good work that I have seen from his 100 plus pic write ups (no need to post that many pics to show detail work IMO) but then you can post the money shots and we all know that's what he is doing. I myself wouldn't trust the guy with my lawn mower, just based on his attitude that I have read of him over the past year or better, and I'm not the only one that has this view of him at this BMW site

... Yes it can be done by hand. I don't recomend it, but a great sander knows how to read a panel for high and low spots as well as uneveness or so called a wavy panel. Without seeing this gentlemans work in person you can't judge him.. Personally I think it would have been better to walk away.

Heh heh, I thought of Barry Theal as soon as I saw this thread, and sure enough, he posted exactly what I expected him to :hifive:

I wonder if that is Frank (mirrorfinish man) who used to post here?

I kinda doubt it, he was all about not needing to use a machine for anything and I can't imagine doing a lot of sanding without using one on the scratches.

Plus, Frank/MirrorFinishMan didn't come across the same way; his version of contentious was a bit softer around the edges if you know what I mean. Even though he and I sure didn't agree about much, I always thought he was an OK guy as people go and this fellow, well...

I think I found the car/thread you are referring to in your OP. It looks like he used M105 though and not ScratchX. As far as hand sanding goes I have to agree with Barry. It may not be the best method, especially on a flat panel, but it can be done and it was how I originally shown to wet sand 21 years ago. You actually use the palm of your hand more than you do your fingers too. Whether or not you'd see a difference between a block and hand would depend on the panel size, shape, and paint texture prior to sanding. the person looking at the panel would also be a factor

I think if you had worded your PM better "constructive criticism" it may have been taken better by him. However, some people are simply stuck in their ways and nothing you tell them is going to change that. The internet/detailing forums are powerful learning tools and it is responsible for many newcomers as well as veterans excelling in their knowledge of detailing very quickly. Those who choose not to use such tools may just end up being left behind. ;)

Just my $.02

Don't waste your time he won't join here and would get banned in sight of a few weeks. He is very confrontational with anyone, I've seen this on that BMW site for some time now..Have a look at all of his threads there are only one or two people that reply and they are always the same ones
