conventional oil -vs- synthetic?

I have used some of the supposedly best synthetics, including Red Line and Motul. In my opinion they do nothing special to your engine. They also seem to burn off faster than a good quality conventional oil. I drive a 1990 Mazda 626 turbo with 230000 miles. My dad bought it new and used Castrol GTX. The engine is all original except for the turbo, which did not give out until 200000 or so. The engine still runs strong. Do yourself a favor and save your money.

I agree they don't seam to do anything special to your engine except lubricate it, but I highly disagree that they burn off faster, it's been my experience they don't.:nixweiss Many types of cars that run at high rpm's like Corvette, say to only use synthetics in their owners manual.

You really got a 2-3 mpg increase? That is amazing!

Before I switched I would get about 325 miles on a good tank. After switching I am getting no less than 345 per tank and have had some get as much as 370 miles on a tank. I have a 15.5 gallon tank and usually fill up with about 2 gallons left.

Edit: It didn't immediatly start getting much better milage. It took about 10-15K before I really started to notice it.

You shouldn't have a huge problem. I plan on switching at 111k after flushing the engine with Auto-RX. If it were an iron block/aluminum head engine I would be more concerned. :)

just curious,

how much ya think a synthetic oil change usually runs?

pay around $45 now.

thanks.

Get the stuff and do it yourself. All you need is a drain pan, filter wrench, a 14mm socket/wrench, funnel, crush washer and the oil. Oh yeah, you'll need ramps too. You will spend about $50-60 to get everything and it's oil and filters after that.

Why flush the engine? Mobil 1 says it's synthetic oil is compatible with conventional oil.

Synthetic all the way- I've seen oil anylasis for an LS1 engine with Mobil 1 and it was good for 15k with filter changes and top offs- Amsoil claims its oil is good for 25k

Hey guys,

I just changed my oil today to Mobil1 5w30 supersyn synthetic, however when i looked on the mobi1 website, there is not recomended oil change interval?? :help: Every other oil had a recomended interval 15000,7500,5000 etc.

Any body know?

It can go for 10k with a filter change and top off. However, the best thing to do is go for your normal OCI and then get an oil analysis. This will tell you how long the oil will last in YOUR car.

I agree. I have been using Mobil One oil religously since 1979. At that time their claim was 25000 miles or around the world with one change. I had it in my 1979 Buick Riviera and the most I went with one change was 20000 miles with 2 filter changes. I traded that car in at 110,000 miles and it ran great. Today I do 10000 mile intervals with a filter change at 5000 on all 3 of my commuter vehicles. Mobil One and other synthetic oils are not only good lubricants. they keep the engine temps running cooler than conventional oil, will get better fuel economy than conv. oil. they suspend contaminants so they dont adhere to your engine parts. they are compatible with conv. oils and they have longer change intervals. Mobil One has tested their oils for 200000 miles with no change and have found little to no wear on internal engine parts. I have been using nothing else but Mobil One in my cars since 1979. I also have never had an engine failure or engine problem in any of my vehicles using Mobil One. I have enough experience over these years with Mobil One synthetics that I have no doubts about their advantages.
