Considering a Mini

I'm 6'4" and 250#.

I've got your weight, but not your height (unfortunately!) and I really didn't have any space issues with the car. I mean, a bigger "boot" would be nice, but it's not really meant as a touring/family load it up and go car, so I can deal. I have a Honda Pilot for people/luggage.

Basically, I'm looking for something that is reliable (isn't everyone?), something that doesn't cost an arm, a leg and part of your soul (again, isn't everyone?), that is sporty/fun to drive (the Mini seems to be perfect) and fuel efficient (to be politically (and fiscally) sound!).

From some of the things that I've read on 2 different forums, the Rover manual gearbox on the standard Cooper is failing and BMW/Mini will be changing over to a Getrag unit for the '05 MY. I believe that I read that this will begin some time this summer. I'm curious to know if this a truly "new" unit or is something that they have had around for a while so that there is some real world experience with it.

I'll post some of the links that I've collected on this problem and the news release later (as I'm at work :( right now!).

Chiming in way late, but I thought I'd offer my thoughts on the car (I've had one a year April 14th). The car had some horrible teething problems the first year (2002). Many of these issues were resolved for 2003, but some things still need adjusted and are not quite right even in the 2004 models. I'll emphasize that it's NOT every car or even close to most, but you should probably check out northamericanmotoring.com and mini2.com for some interaction with more owners of the cars. They're a great bunch of people! Someone on NAM is selling a small-profile spare kit for the S.

Personally, I LOVE the car (I've got the S). Its handling is AMAZING. I've modded it slightly to have a reduced diameter pulley and some other things. Next on the list are some ECU modification and suspension work to make the car even more fun on the track. ;)
