Considering a Mini

I am considering buying a Mini and am wondering what the overall Autopian opinion might be about the car. Like it? Love it? Hate it? Never driven one?

I've only begun my research into reliability, whether it holds its value, etc., but an Autopian opinion is important to me.

I'll be interested to see what kind of replies I might receive.

I love MINIs and was about to order a 2004 MINI Cooper S, Pepper White (or black) with white roof, Sport Package, Cordoba Beige Leather, and Navigation. I've done all my research, test driven it, but for practical reasons, couldn't decide to put myself on the list or not.

One of my concerns is buyer's remorse. I hear that 2005 models are substantially upgraded, with more storage, nicer interior, more power, and new styling. Granted this is a sport hatch, but I plan to drive it daily and would like even more conveniences. I also don't need three cars... my Honda only has 5000 miles, the VW, 26,000. I'll most likely wait till to 2006, so I'll have both an excuse to trade in my VW and be happy with the updated MINI.

I believe MINI's have a higher residual value than any other car sold in the US. The handling is fantastic, the details are incredible... it's a very nicely packaged little car.

My wife has a '04 S, navigation, heated seats. Lots of fun to drive, very economical and safe. One of the best bargains today, in my opinion (you'll pay MSRP and it is a fair price).

My only quibbles with the car is that the interior has lots of nuisance factors and the S version is run-flat only tires (they fill the space for the spare with the battery, the supercharger takes up more room under the hood where the battery would have been).

On the whole I don't think you can go wrong with one. We did pay MSRP and we did wait 8 months for it, but we could sell it right now for the same (or even more) money.

Jim,

I was going ask the same question as my Jetta's lease is coming to end soon.

To everyone,

How does the Mini handle winter driving condtions?

How does the Mini handle rough roads? (I know the car handles well from what I have.)

How is the storage, with the rear seat up? (I play hockey and have a large bag for equipment)

Can the Mini be serviced by BMW dealers? (The closet Mini dealer is 1.5 hours away)

1.) Only test drove it in CA - sorry

2.) Rough roads we have plenty - and I find the MINI to ride acceptably. It's firmer than most other cars, but it's not uncomfortable. You might want to stay away from the Sport Package and appreciate its extra sidewall.

3.) It's not bad... with the seats up, I think your bag would fit, taking up the entire trunk.

4.) Sorry, BMW dealers won't service MINIs.

1) Great in the snow. (We have Dunlop M2's and 15" wheels) However, the ground clearance is limited. DSC and ABS are well-implemented.

2) Pretty smooth ride, but don't get 17" wheels. Feels like a much larger car due to long wheelbase.

3) Storage with rear seats up is terrible, but OK with seats down. They made the car better for 4 adults but at the expense of the rear storage. (Unlike my Integra which had huge storage but was essentially a 2+2) Bring your stuff to the dealer for a reality check.

4) Probably. It really is a BMW. Parts supply might be an issue.

UK take on this. My colleague's wife has a Cooper with Chilli pack.

She does very little mileage and car was valued £250 higher than purchase price @ 9 months.

Another friend has just traded in his Z3M roadster against a Cooper S Works and his GF has a standard Cooper.

Massively popular over here. My GF looked at one but settled on a Ford Ka instead (S/H was less than a third the price of the Mini, looks just as funky IMO and handling - most fun I've ever had in a car - well, almost but that's unprintable.......)

Ford Ka - see attached link

This is good, I also have been thinking about a mini as a play car. The price is right, it looks diffrent, and you can get them with a nice amount of options. BUT, power is a question. I don't want a complete dog!

I am not expecting to be out running any cops or in drag races (Italian Job) with it but does it have any ghetty up at all!!!!!

Thanks

During a recent car buying period, it came down to a Mini or a Lexus IS300. As my wife needed the upgraded luxury and a real back seat for work, we bought (and love) a 2002 Lexus IS300 with 9K miles for about the price of a new Mini.

Would the Mini have been worth it? Without a doubt, but it didn't quite fit our requirements at the time. We have talked repeatedly about buying a Mini as a third car as we loved the car in the test ride. The Mini dealer was a former Mini race car driver in Europe. After he saw we knew how to drive, he tought us to torque steer at 85 mph around corners in a 25 mph zone - an incredible handling vehicle. My friends here in Boston love their Mini in the show.

All around I think the Mini a wonderful vehicle. We were in New Zealand for two weeks recently and mentioned how much we would have loved to have had one for the roads there.

Best of luck with the decision.

I have a MINI Cooper S as a fourth car and it's strictly a "play" car. It has great pick up, I don't think there's a better handling car on the road because of it's stance. Some BMW dealerships do service them it depends on the area. Here in Idaho I have to drive 5 hours for service at a BMW dealership.

Last year I went from a Passat to a Cooper as my only car. While totally in love with the Mini's style and value, I was a little worried about moving into something so small.

I haven't regretted it for a moment. Small on the outside, but the cockput feels roomier than the Passat's. Fold down the backseat and you can fit even a huge, old steamer trunk in the back (I did this). Corners like nobody's business, has a huge fun factor, and a nice community of owners.

I find it to be the Mac of cars: sure, you can find something cheaper that goes faster, but it exudes quality, guarantees a fun experience and makes you grin like a fool.

Didn't I read somewhere where the Mini had reliability and quality control problems? Did they work these problems out?

All of the MINI problems were worked out in the first year of production, of course you'll run into someone now and then who's had to have some work done, but that's with any car.

I glad to hear all of the positive comments. My greatest worry is reliability and servicing. I am fortunate to have a Mini dealer about 15 miles away, so that is not an issue...I just don't want to go there too often!

Currently, I am feeling pretty disappointed with VW's customer service as I've had a cold start issue that is progressively getting worse and the dealer and VWoA refuse to bend more than an ear about the problem. My jetta only had a 2 year/24k mile warranty on it which is now over. The problem is diagnosed to replacing the engine wiring harness with no guarantee of success. $1500 is a lot to roll on a (presumably) educated guess.

Now that I've killed my chances on seling it on this board (not that I would ever sell it like this to a fellow Autopian) I'm just going to cut my losses and move on.

I'll keep checking to see if anyone comes up with a negative or 2 that will make me reconsider.

I really had no idea that the Mini is so popular after its rebirth. Hmmmmm.

I bought a Mini early last fall. A 2004, with sport package, winter package, dipping rear view mirror and rain sensor wipers. Pretty basic....on purpose.

IMO, many of the options offered by Mini are overly priced and not really necessary in a car who's one major draw is it's low price. I stayed away from leather, (which looks very poor in a short time, BTW), Nav (just too pricey to me), Aero package, automatic air conditioning, and sunroof. (I'm not a sunroof person.)

I did buy many factory OEM parts and accessories by mail from a dealer who offers them at a substantial discount from list. Rubber Mats, euro parcel shelf, trunk mat and cargo net, I even bought the Aero kid side skirts and installed them myself. I also got the aero grille. (I installed the top section but need to finish the bottom.) There are more goodies I will get later.

I test drove both 16 and 17" wheels both with and without the sport package. Comfort was a BIG concern to me. I happen to think the sport package on 17" wheels is just fine. The biggest thing you can do to improve the ride on ANY size tire is to get rid of the hard sidewalls in the runflats. When the all season runflats I get are worn, they are history. I'll call AAA when I get a flat!

There is no doubt that the materials used in the car are inexpensive. I open the door to my Audi and it smells like leather. The Mini smells like plastic and rubber. The Audi switchgear, buttons and knobs have a solid, quiet feel to them. It's a tactile pleasure just to use the directional stalk. The Mini items feel very lightweight, the plastic is thin and the casting seams show, the switches go clickety-click. BUT, having said all that, the quality of fit and the way this car is designed and put together is excellent. Certainly BMWish. (Which is almost as good as Audiish:) ) You have to remember, too, the car is half the price...literally, than my Audi. Considering this it's one heck of a value.

And the best thing of all, as my wife says, "Driving this car just makes me smile." :D
