Computer question for the gurus.

There is no cure!
Everytime I attemp to visit certain websites like

example: topoftheline.com

or when I'm surfing the DC store and attempt to checkout

or if I go to my banks website and attempt to login for online banking,

the browser never reaches. It attempts to but ends with "page cannot be displayed".

What type of settings may be active that I should deactivate in order to work.

This is my own personal laptop and not a work computer so Im sure theres no blockers, firewall, ect.

I'm also sure that its NOT that the sites are down, as they work on other computers.

My computer does that every now and then too. I just hit the refresh button and the site pops up. If yours is doing something different, I have no idea of what it could be.

what browser r you using and do you have firewall or any software to protect your computer from virus and adware
sorry didnt read entire post about firewall and blockers....

i am by no means an expert...
does your computer performance degrade over time....meaning it take longer to load pages
or your only problems r what you explained "only certain sites that r secure"

Come to the conclusion that its probably spyware. Tomorrow morning Ill borrow the office's syware software to clean it up.

few things i suggest
run spyware,(i use Ad-aware or spybot-its free)
install and run Antivirus (i use avg anti virus -its free)
once that done delete your history/cookies then do a defrag
just a suggestion....

by the way f you r running dsl your carrier may provide some of these features free...hope this helps

I would do the spyware and virus scans regardless, but it may also be that some internet explorer settings were changed such as the security ones. I think it is in tools and then options tab for internet explorer, then security or privacy maybe. I use firefox which is similar, and I highly recommend it.

Get Firefox, never had any problems after I switched over.

Ding! ding! Yeah FF its great browser. I switched from IE to FF since the beta 0.0.5 was out.

I ran spybot just now and it eliminated a couple spyware hosts I had on my computer. Came back to my IE and FF browsers and reseted all the original settings and still. No access to secure sites.

All of the sites work perfectly on other computers, but on my laptop they just don't show.

Any more ideas on what it could be?

Strange problem you got there, if it happens with both browsers then seems unlikely the problem is the browser...Anyone know if the checkout pages using Java? Could it be that?

If you are using a wireless connection then from the sounds of it you are running 64 bit encryption, need 128 on most secure sites. You need to create a signal that provides for 128 bit encryption.

No... At the moment Im connected straight to my wall. I have a router hardwired throughout the house and computers coming from a fiberoptic cable in the wall.

But when I would occasionally use my wireless broadband card from "verizon" I wouldn't have these problems.

In internet explorer I know you can view your encryption strength, it is called cipher strength, it is in help and then about internet explorer, it should be 128. If you are using firefox now, you can check if ssl 2 ssl 3 and tsl 1 are selected, by going to tools options advanced. They should be, allows secure connections. Beyond that clearing all cache, cookies, and temp files which i think you did is all i can think of.

edit: make sure to check windows update, and get all updates. Finally if you can remember the date this started to happen windows can restore itslef back to that time if you have restore points created.

After doing all this, I think it might actually be my router at home. I recently had to purchase a new one. I'm thinking its not enabled for sites with http and only for sites with https. I'll head home tonight and check it.
