Computer Hard drives

Keep an eye on the Sunday ads, the big stores that carry computer stuff like CompUSA, Best Buy, Circuit City, or even OfficeMax often have really cheap drives with a rebate. CompUSA even has their own brand of made by Maxtor, I believe. I find that hard drive quality is hard to discern by your average computer user, so I wouldn't worry about making sure its "high end", like someone else suggested, just make sure you go at or above 7200rpm.

Never, ever shop for pc parts at Best Buy, Circuit City, or especially CompUSA unless you absolutely have to. Newegg.com is good, zipzoomfly.com (which used to be googlegear.com) is good too. By the by, just to plug some of my other favorite sites, xoxide.com, modthebox.com, pcpowerandcooling, coolerguys, dangerden.com (I bought all the stuff to run my watercooling setup from them), and directron.com are awesome sites if you want to check out some of the cool things you can do to make your pc a little cooler. I have had to call the Best Buy, Circuit City, and CompUSA guys on their BS to some of the customers too many times.

Also if you are intrested in learning about PC's or getting into some of the cooler stuff you can do on with yours check out these sites, Hardocp.com, forums.extremeoverclocking.com, guru3d.com, and anandtech.com. But stay away from Tomshardware.com, he is a paid Intel guy so he always compares the old AMD stuff to the brand spanking new Intel stuff.

Sorry for the long post, I just like building and modding PC's more than anything else I can think of.

More than detailing - LEAVE NOW :lol

hehe - I mod pc's too - been a [H]ardOCP visitor for years!

more of an overclocker though :) - occasionally you can get a good deal at best buy but more often than not what is 200 bucks there (computer parts wise) is 140 bucks on newegg.com

I would agree with this statement 95% of the time but they do have some good sale and rebate items. I would never build an entire system buying from these retail places but for something like a hard drive you can do fine if you wait for the right sale.

ZESTY-MAN,

Not say that AlienWare isnt any good but they are way over priced for what you get....You can build an awesome rig that will preform just as good if not better than there's for about half the price they charge.

I just recently built a new gamming rig for myself and I got everything new -
Antec Performance Plus Case
Asus K8VSE Deluxe Mobo
AMD 64 3000+
ATI Radeon 9800 Pro 128 Graphics card
1GB Mushkin PC3200 Memory
Maxtor 120 HDD
430 W Antec True Power Supply
Lite-on CD Burner (52x)
Asus CD-Rom Drive
SoundBlaster Audigy2 Sound Card
Logitech Z640 5.1 Surround Sound Speakers
ViewSonic 19" Perfect Flat UltraBright CRT Monitor
KeyBoard and Mouse
Windows XP Pro
6 80mm Case Fans
all for ...................... $1459.62

To test my system against the best model AlienWare makes this is what it said:
A High-performance system detected!
The Performance Analyzer has detected that this new Alienware-system does not offer performance increasement compared to your current system. Please click "Continue" to view other Alienware-models!

Component Comparison
…………………………..Your system .............…………Aurora Enthusiast

CPU: AMD Athlon(tm) …64 2003 MHz AMD ...............Athlon(tm) 64 2200 MHz

Graphics Chipset: ……..ATI RADEON 9800 PRO ....... ..NVIDIA GeForce FX 5900

Memory: ………………1022 MB ...………………..........512 MB

OS:…………………….. Microsoft Windows XP .............Microsoft Windows XP

Again not bashing Alienware but just as good can be had for alot less.

yea, i would have recommended that too, but i wanst quite sure what he knew about comps. like i said, i made my own comupter too, for about the same price as you. the thing is, my comp is now sorta outdated......... the thing i like about alienware is their support, and the colors and extras that they offer, very cool. but if i do say so myself, you have a hell of a nice comp. im planning to make another comp sometime this year or next year. i got all my parts from newegg, and i highly recommend that you go there. very good service, you can even track your order, to see when its coming. very fast and efficent. HOWEVER, newegg sent me defected memory!!!! so, i put in a claim and they shipped me new memory, and it worked fine. again, very quick and they said sorry and all of that stuff.
