When hand applying compound should you rub back and forth or in circular motions???? I always rub back and forth to prevent swirls but this detail shop told me to rub in circles when apllying waxes,compunds.....

When you say "compound" what is it your trying to do ? Any abrasive polish would be better applied in a back and forth motion. This help in prohibiting swirl marks.....

it doesnt matter to me .. polish& wax will take out swirl marks .. make sure you get all the compound off .. maybe wash the car again .. get all that compound residue off or else it will look cloudy..

I use a cross cutting motion according to what I am trying to remove from the paint, swirls I always use a polisher or orbital for depending on how bad they are. My final 4 coats are hand polish, 2 coats of sealer, and a handwax, first application I use a front to rear motion, then up and down twice, then front to rear, I try to cover all angles so the paint is worked in all directions instead of just one. Just what I have found works best, although on certain finishes and colors I have found it doesn't matter unless you are going all out, I kinda play it by ear depending on what is expected.

I've never used a buffer before but I've heard you should use a figure eight motion - vertical and then horizontal.
