collinite vs wheel wax

I just use Klasse SG .. I put a few layers on in the spring before I put the wheels on for the summer. I find that the carnauba based ones can't deal with the brake heat.

I totally stay away from wheel cleaners which kill the LSPs , same with APCs and I personally don't think either are good for the wheel finish

Save your money, the dedicated wheel products don't have any sort of durability. Collinite is good, but I find something with cleaners works better to get the wheel glossy and removes tar/brake dust. DG501 is a great wheel sealant and cleaner. It can make it 4-6 months.

DG501? I must be wrong, but its the Marine Polish I see as #501.

That's the one. It just has stronger cleaners and supposedly more corrosion inhibitors. Works fantastic by hand and machine.

Wow, I was just thinking about all of this... OC or OS, or maybe 476s on wheels. I have the chance to do this on new VW Velos wheels (which are now hidden until I choose to uh, "reveal" my purchase). I was leaning toward using what I already have:

OS or 476, or maybe Wheel Wax.

Concourswanna b- While I'm a big fan of using what you already have, I'd absolutely positively OptiCoat those new wheels. No question about it.

Jesstzn- Yeah, I did OK with KSG for a long time. On the "wax and brake heat" thing, it was funny...I never had any discernable issue from that. I mean..the wax approach was markedly inferior to layered sealant, sure... But I never saw any signs that the heat from (street) driving was any big deal.

Accumulator- Well I think I may have to go ahead and do so... I really want to keep these as nice as possible, as they were a little bit of an investment (not like BBS LMs or something, but still). Still need to order some tires.

Concourswanna b- I think you'll be happy with it. I was a *very* hard sale...I still won't OptiCoat my paint...and the initial look didn't wow me the way a fresh LSPing can, but after living with the coated wheels for a little while I decided that it really is the way to go. Heh heh, I woulda bet money that my opinion would go the other way!

I use collinite on my wheels but I've been wondering if a wheel wax will last longer and worth the expense?

IMO most "wheel waxes" aren't anything special. If you're happy with the Collinite then I'd just keep using it. I will say that I quit using Collinite for this in favor of (heavily layered) KSG and then switched from *that* to FK1000P. And now I'm switching from the FK to OptiCoat.

Don't waste your money on Poorboys Wheel Sealant. That stuff is a joke, on a daily driven car you might get a week of protection. I plan on using FK1000P the next time I do the wheels

While the beading of that stuff does fall off after a week, it seems to keep something else around for a while longer. The biggest asset to that stuff is how well it cleans baked on brake dust and tar. I seem to alternate between that and 501 because both get all the grime off the wheels that even WB won't budge.

Noting that I'm one *huge* proponent of FK1000P, can't I talk you into OptiCoating them instead?

I already have FK1000P lying around, so I will try that first. Maybe later on

I agree the beading goes away quick, but so does the slickness and ease of wasing after about 3 weeks. That's been my experience when using it

If you're going to buy something other than Collinite I'd suggest FK1000p. I have one of the popular wheel waxes and while it smells nice, is easy to apply, and looks nice its durability/longevity is really lacking compared to FK1000p.
