Collinite 845 vs. 476s

Yep, the other awesome-durability brand...

Malachi, no, they are not the same. The Prewax Cleaner is first step of the old, but still very fine Mothers 3-step series. It is like a traditional paint cleaner (mainly non-abrasive) like for example Zymöl HD Cleanse or Victoria Wax Light Cleanse. It leaves the paint squeaky clean and ensures proper bonding. Pleasant, easy to use and produces very good results. It can not correct much but the cleaning performance is excellent.

The Cleaner Wax is basically their California Gold carnauba wax with cleaners in it. A good one step for the average weekend hobbyist.

Before putting on Collinite, I need to use something to remove some light swirls and scratches. Does Megs or Mothers have something in their product line that's good at removing swirls and scratches?

That's right, there's some other component in 845 that makes it such a durable liquid. I read about it once on another detailing forum but I don't remember any details. "Resin" sounds right, but then that's a very broad category.

Neither the 476S or the 845 have cleaners in them, they're "straight waxes".

Since 476s and 845 are just wax, can they be layered?

If they can be layered, do they need a cure time between layers?

I'm thinking if they can be layered then there may be some additional durability.

yes they can be layered, after hazing and removal I believe another coat can be applied

That's good to hear. How about layering 845 over 476s. Some have mentioned here that 476s is more

durable but 845 looks better. Would there be any problems layering both together?

I've layered 476S many times- I have no reason to believe it does *not* layer and plenty of reasons to believe that it does (including greater durability).

I wait a day or so between layers but IMO you don't really need to. But OTOH, there's an old rule-of-thumb that a week between layers of wax is a good idea. Do whatever's feasible for you and I'm sure it'll work out fine.

No problem, I regularly do that. If you want greater durability go with 476/845, and if you want better look, just put the 845 over the 476. However, the differences are almost negligible. In my eyes they both look good and way more durable than I need.

You can buy collinite online by searching "collinite" on google and buying it from the cheapest place if you don't have an advance auto parts store near you.

I currently have 845 over 476 on one car, and it's doing great (all over AIO). On another I have 845 over ssr2.5, it's doing great, too. 1st one is 1.5 months, the other is at a month.

On my MINI, which has an imfamous boot (trunk), I tested SG against 845 side by side, and niether could withstand the constant barrage of dust, grime, dirt, crap, tar, salt, snow etc... I've never had a product work longer than a few weeks on the boot.

I'll agree with the others that 476 isn't as wet looking as 845, but I can't comment on if it's more durable or not since I haven't tested them both side by side anywhere. Collinite advertises 476 as more durable.

I found 845 at Advance Auto Parts, and it was in the Marine section. You can't find it in all of their stores from my experience though. You can go to their website and see if the stores near you have it in stock.

That's is how I found my bottle...I had to make a 20 mile drive for it, but it was definately worth it.

Megs has a ton of products for scratch/swirl removal, and I believe Mothers Power Polish would also work.

I was under the impression that #885 has cleaners (not abrasives) in it unlike #476?

Anyone use the saphire cleaner wax? Seems like a good item to use on rocker panels and bumpers to cut through built up tar, dirt, grime, etc... in one step - and cheaper then AIO or other dedictaed paint cleaners because it leaves behind a waxed finish. No need to follow it up if you don't want unlike other single purpose paint cleaners.

Dear Bence:

Thanks for your interest in Collinite products. The #S-238 Insulator Paste wax is the exact same product as the #476s Super Doublecoat Paste Wax & #885 Fleetwax Paste. Different size can, marketed to the industrial industry, but the contents inside the can are the same. The #S-238 is used by electrical contractors to wax electrical insulators after they have been chemically cleaned to help avoid electrical flashovers.

VOC-Compliance question: has made us work with our suppliers in provided us with ingredients that meet the VOC regulations that we have faced. We now use a low VOC solvent that meets the requirements of the regulations and does not affect the performance of the products. So far the feedback we have received from our customers has been positive.

Customer Service

That's why I ordered the #885.

one thing I notice from people who contacted Collinite customer service is that the customer service reps always claim some of the products are the same and point the customer toward the best price/once product. :xyxthumbs

The nearest Advance Auto Parts is 35 miles from me. I was over that way anyway, so I went for a bottle of the Collinite.

I can attest to the fact that Color-X and 845 look awesome on white!!
