Cobra Wet Sand Gone Wrong: Will PC + SSR Fix

Would that be a lambswool pad and a Rotary Anthony, not a PC ?

Rotary yes.....a PC would not be my choice but others may find it works well for them.

I am trying to find some time to get some pictures taken of a black Lexus hood and I'll then post them up. I hope to take some BEFORES after I have swirled and scratched the paint up then take some pics right after using the Optimum black wool pad and Optimum Polish then finishing off with a Optimum finishing pad. It should be swirl free and ready to seal after only two steps......I HOPE:D

I have also used Optimum now a lot and I have to say I am impressed with it. I wetsanded my best friends 96 Towncar that he got for free and I used a Yellow LC pad via rotary and Optimum and then followed with a green LC pad via rotary and Finished with a white LC pad and Optimum. I had to use 3 steps b/c it was black or else I am confident that 2 steps would have done the job just fine.

Why did they sand in these areas?

What grit were they using?

I would consider wet sanding these areas a little with 3000 grit just to smooth them out a little. Body Shops tend to use coarser grit paper than detailers do to speed things up.

Save your money on the pc and spend it on a rotary. Pick up some of the smaller backing plates. One for the 6" pads and another to fit some Cyclo pads for those tight areas. You would be surprised what you can do with the rotary at a slower speed like 1000 to 1500 rpm. The smaller pads run a lot cooler. If you use the Optimum polish it will give you a very very long working time this acts like a barrier so your pad dose not dry out. In witch case you could damage the paint. Do your cutting with a fine grade of lambs wool. The wool will produce less heat. Polishing should be done with a foam polishing or finishing pad.

I work for a shop that do paint jobs that come out like mirrors . What they do is wet sand with 1000 then wet sand with 1500 then wet sand with 2000 then they use 3m compound with a wool pad and rotary, then the same compound with a foam pad then 3m s.m.r.with a foam pad , in all cases they use a rotary. At our place it takes 3 days to color sand and buff a car . Its a lot of work ,but the results are outstanding.

I think a pc would not have a chance here.

I would try sanding with some 3000grit even 2000grit as it will make getting out the sanding marks much easier.

I affraid a rotary, and wool pad is the only way out. Try to use a polish that doesnt break down too easily, try optimum you could even try Menzerna Intensive polish.

Id would follow that with finishing pad and intensive polish again, then finishing with finishing pad and Menzeran PO85RD (FP or FP2 if you havent got it)

Failling all that, or if that seems too much to handle leave it to a recommended professional in your area. I takes alot of experience to get a perfect result with wet sanding and doing it on your own black car for the first time in book isnt the way to go.

Good Luck

OK guys as an update it's now time to tackle this issue. The car has been in garage for the last few months and now I'm going to tackle these issues. My plan of attack is a PC7424 and either:

Clay

SSR2.5

SSR2 or 1 (??)

RMG

Souveran Paste by hand

OR

Clay

Menzerna IP

FIP II

FTG

Souveran Paste by hand

Since my original post I've worked with a PC on a buddies black Mach and I like the SSR/Souveran combo. I'm not sure if SSR has what I need but after reviewing my pictures to his car my surface is cluttered but not all that worse then another black ford towel dried. From what I've read I think Menzerna has better ability to fix my surface but that truly comes down to both opinions and experience with both products which I do not have..

I was also thinking about a rotary but I think I'll stick with a PC I'm pretty sure it can handle this job, as my buddies car was almost as bad. As it turns out my car was finished with 3000 grit and the surface is silky yet the imperfections show in direct light.

I'd really appreciate some more input and your opinions on what my next move should be. I could also use some help on pad selction and PC settings. I've read around online and seen some of the step-by-steps but I'd like some real direction.

I would sand it with 2000 grit to even it out. From the pics it looks as if someone sanded very uneven. My attack plan would be 3m RC via rotary, 3m MG and then you can apply a sealant after that. The RC works best via rotary.

Ok guys well I'm waiting on a check from a customer but I think I know what I'm going to do. After taking your posts into consideration and searching some more I've decided on the following course of action..

Purchase PC along with the following:

Wash: Menzerna Auto Shampoo, or PW Super Slick & Suds (for smoother finish?)

[/B]Clay: Clay Magic (Fine/Blue?) or (Medium/Red?)
Polish I'm not exactly sure on this step but I like what I see with Menzerna and black ford's. So I was thinking:

MPG w/SFX-1 @ ?? Spd ?? backing

MIP w/SFX-2 @ ?? Spd ?? backing

FPII w/SFX-3 @ ?? Spd ?? backing OR PO85RD SFX-3 ? @ ?? Spd ?? backing

Glaze: Menzerna Finishing Touch Glaze ?? pad or hand ?? if pad then which ??

LSP: FMJ w/MF applicator SYN OR Souveran CARNUBA either by hand

OR[/COLOR]

PW SSS

CM Blue

MPG

MIP

FPII

PO85RD

RMG

Souveran

Questions:

1.) For drying after wash use Micropak Waffle Weave 24" MF ?

2.) Do we still dawn wash our cars before clay or is a good wash enough ?

3.) What is best between polish apps, hand with MF or machine with bonnet MF to remove, or other ?

4.) Which backing plates for SFX pads ?

5.) What other pads then SFX or LC ?

6.) Why do people use PO85RD instead of FPII on non-ceramiclear cars? Is it that much better of a polish?

7.) Where can I find good prices? I like PakShak, Autopia for the PC, and ProperAutoCare for Menzerna ??

Is that everything? I think I saw the speed somewhere on here, but I'll check later i'm on my way to work. Anything with a ? is somewhere i'd like opinion or experience.

The two big things I'm worrying about it removing the damage, and achieving a deeper wetter longer lasting look. I think the products I've seleted will achieve such results. Let me know your thought and opinions..

DO NOT USE THE RED CLAY MAGIC!!! I REPEAT. DO NOT USE THE RED CLAY MAGIC!!!
