clearcoat touchup on single stage paint

I have an 87 BMW 325 with single stage paint (Zinnobarrot) and got touch up paint from www.paintscratch.com. Turns out their touchup paint is all basecoat/clearcoat, even for cars with single stage paint. I asked them & they said to clearcoat and wetsand/polish out the touchups and it SHOULD match well. A sample strip clearcoated is a perfect match to the car.

Anyboby done this ? I am having a hard time figuring out how much basecoat to fill in before going clearcoat, seems like it would need to almost completely fill the scratch/spot with basecoat then a thin layer of clearcoat on top.

Also have a lot of spots about the size of a pinhead on the hood, maybe for these mix basecoat/clearcoat together then apply ?

Thanks for your ideas.

:welcome to Autopia Chris325i!

I wouldn't personally try and "mix" the base and clear coat together... but that's just me... :nixweiss

Chris325i- Welcome to Autopia. I have two single-stage cars and have owned a LOT of them over the years.

Using base/clear IS NOT the right way to touch up your single-stage paint!! Get some proper single-stage and touch up with that. You DON'T want parts of your red car SS and parts B/C! It'll age/wear/look differently. Single-stage is just a whole different animal, which SOME of us like a lot better than clearcoats.

Nope, you can't use the basecoat by itself (it's designed to work/last with a topping of clear) and you can't mix them together. I sincerely hope you'll get just get the right stuff.

What Accumulator said...

Too often we consider a sales clerk's remarks as expert advice because of where they work. Take Accumulator's advice and send that stuff back.

I've actually used some clear on single-stage paint years ago. It was very obvious where the touch-ups were after about 2 months of rain, sun, washing, etc.

OK, thanks. I'll suck it up and start over. I am kind of disappointed in paintscratch.com, had very good reviews from many people. Any idea where to get the single stage touchup paint for an 87 BMW ?

Have you tried BMW themselves? I got a quality touchup kit for my Beemer (bike) and it was a '93. Matched perfectly. It was for a 2 stage paint job though. Wouldn't hurt to inquire.
