Clearcoat pits

I was just thinking after reading some posts here. The hood on my car seems to have a fair amount of pits in the clear coat. If you look along the hood, they are very evident. Wouldn't touching up a clear coat pit be similar to touching up a chip or scratch in the paint? could I buy some clear and touch up all of the pits and then buff it down with some PB's ssr2.5 to make everything level? I had tried to lightly wetsand some of the spots about 2 years ago, and it helped, but now I am thinking why take the clear down to pit level, when I can bring the pit up to clear level? Any thoughts?

When someone knowledgable pipes in on this I was wondering if applying clearcoat of etched spots would work as well. :dunno

So opinions on pits and etching please.

Sure it can be done, but it will take a lot of time to fill them and level them correctly. I hope you have a good back and a lot of patience:hippi

I've got all winter, since it is my toy car and I am going to be doing some engine work also :flameon . I am going to try a few in the next couple of months and see how it turns out.

A couple thoughts ... since you have time ...
Like you planned, just do a few to start.
After you build the clear to the thickness you want, let it sit for a week or so before any wet sanding or buffing. This will allow the clear to get as hard as possible.
One of the problems I run into is when I try to hurry the process; the clear is softer than the original (it will always be this way to some extent), and when buffing the touch-up area ends up being lower than the original.
Good Luck ... :)

You could also try Langka. I've used it with some sucess for paint chips so it should work fine for you're problem...What I usually do is touch up the chip...then use the Langka...then I buff it about a week later...good luck
