Clear Bra

Ok...



So i posted earlier how my new car hood had an altercation with a key and unforunately the key won. I am looking into painting the car and was wondering if i could install a clear bra on it afterwards. I did a search on the site some say yes some say no due to it not being oem paint. Wanted a more official thread on the subject since 90% of the chips on it will be taken away on the repaint.



Wanted to add i understand i will need to wait 90 days after the repaint if i am allowed to put a clear bra on without damaging the paint.
 
I have had two cars with hoods repainted and had the clear bras put on both time right after painting with no adverse affects
 
If the body shop you use has a heated spray booth you don't have to wait that long.

After the clear is sprayed the booth is heated up to bake the finish. Also there are blowers in the booth like a convection oven. This helps the paint cure very fast.

My fealing is you should be able to apply the Clear Bra after a week.

The ovens in body shops are not hot enough and don't run long enough to fully cure the paint (as the OEM processes do). Re-spray baking only speeds up the process enough to let them sand-cut-buff and shove it out the door a few hours quicker. You should always wait the manufacturers' recommended period.

Anthony and I pulled a Clear Bra off I think a 98 carrera black. The Bra looked hammered but the paint under it had no chips at all. The only damage I could see were little indents where the bumper took some hard impacts.

The clear bra will stop the chips but it is not perfect. It will scratch and there is little that you can do to remove the scratches . No matter how careful you are you will get wax/dirt on the seams. My most recent experience was that the film water spotted and nothing that I did would remove the spots short of removing the clear bra. I have had this done to several cars and will not do it again. It's a matter of choice chips or screwed up film. When I removed it I was amazed as to how yellow the film had become in 10 months.

The film is the key. Two of the top films: 3M Aerospace and Venture. These films are the clearest in the industry and do not yellow.



Most now go with the newer 3M Aerospace film as it's very clear.



I have Armorglove installed on my brand new '06 997 Porsche C2S and can tell you that it's a very clear film, hard to detect unless you get wax in the seam.



Depending on where you live, it's best to find a dealer who just does films and look at some of the cars they've done. It pays to have a quality shop do the work and guarantee it as well.



Maintenance: Plexus is what you get when Armorglove does your film.



Best investment I've made on both cars I had done.

My film was venture film and the installer was extremely good. He did 3 of my cars. To remove the spots I tried the following: Goof off (recommended by the installer), Plexus, Safe Cut polishing compound, Menzerna FP and 1006FF, 3M fine polisihg compound and a concotion of 3M polishing compound and 3M glaze. Nothing worked. It made it shiny but the spots remaind.



The thing that really honks me off is that the installer is now refusing to respond to my messages.
