Cleaning turn signal/wiper stalks?

I was giving my car a quick interior/exterior cleaning today and noticed that there was some kind of dirt or something coating my turn signal stalk. I rubbed at it with my finger and it came off but left an ugly residue that makes the thing look really bad. Is there a good way to clean these things?

try a mix of woolite and water. like an oz. or so of woolite to 5-6 oz of water. shake it up in a spray bottle and hit a MF with a couple squirts and work it in. it cleans just about everything in my VW. shoe scuffs, dirt, etc

wouldn't rec. anything too strong cuz some interior coatings will end up coming off (like VW)

Yea, any interior cleaner will probably get it off. It's just dirt/oil buildup from your fingers.

Is this like the stuff that builds up on a computer mouse? shouldn't be too difficult to remove.

I was actually afraid at first that I'd rubbed off some kind of coating, but I can't imagine there's any kind of interior coating that would come off just from being rubbed at with a finger.
