Cleaning these rims...

I have rims identical to these and they have some caked on brake dust. I tried some Sonus and a brush too and left the Sonus on there for 3-5 mins. I repeated it but it doesn't get them as clean as these rims. Same rim. When you get really close, it appears like they have a layer of paint on them, but I have a hard time believing that. What would be the best cleaner for these? I'm not sure if they have clearcoat or not. Really I know nothing about them, so any feedback would be great. Also, what would be a good wheel wax? I've been reading about that but haven't seen many suggestions on products. How about just Wheel Wax? Or is there better? Thanks.

Don't have those products. I have Meguiar's Deep Crystal Systems Polish - described as - (This product is not a wax. It is a pure polish that conditions and nourishes the paint and is the secret to creating an awesome, deep, wet-look shine) and I have the Deep Crystal System Paint Cleaner (This amazing, nonabrasive cleaner safely removes contaminants, light oxidation, light scratches and swirls to restore damaged and dull finishes. This easy to use formula uses advanced technology to prepare all paint finishes for polishing and waxing). I also have SSR3, which I don't think I'll try. I tried brass/aluminum polish on a small slot and it appeared to be taking more than just the dirt off, so I quit that right away. The only thing else I have is the Sonus. I have some VM and EX-P on the way if either of those will work for a Wax, but not going to try unless it's ok. I want them clean then protected of course.
 
Give it a shot with the mildest polish you got around. I once left 12Z on my wheels too long and I thought I was stuck with stains. #80 and some sweat got them right out. No biggie polishing a little paint off since you shouldn't have to do it often at all.

Your rims have a clear coat on them. Brake dust is murder on them. After you polish clean them once a week. Stay away from chemical cleaners thay will age the wheel faster.

You can give the Vanilla Moose a try. It is a mild polish. If that takes care of the problem, you can then follow-up with the EX-P to protect your wheels.

I don't know if it will work, but it is good stuff. Those rims are from a newer RL. (I can tell-there are 3 RLs in my family). I used eagle one on 04 RL rims and it worked great, but you may need something stronger.
 
A2z really seems to do the job for me. More importantly than the brake dust it takes off, it loosens the reamaining dust allowing you to easily take the rest off with some soap and water and a brush or towel.
 
I'll get some of that Eagle One and try it just to get the harder stains out, then I'll also try the polish and throw some EX-P on and try to maintain them weekly so I don't have to throw any chemical cleaner on them in the future. Thanks. And it is an RL :)
