Cleaning Suspension components

Anyone know the best way to clean off hard caked on crap on springs and shocks? I dont know what it is, but Simple Green with a toothbrush didn't do much. Is there anything else I can use to get this stuff off? Maybe metal brush of some type? The stuff is baked into the rubber cover too, but not as bad as the springs. Is it layers and layers after layers of brake dust? Any help appreciated.

Spray some Simple Green on it and let it set there for a while and then come back and try to take it off. Sometimes you have to let the product penetrate the baked on gunk before it will budge. I just started using Optimum Power Clean and found that it really good for tough, grungy things.

I've done OK with various citrus products; engine cleaners/etc. The steamer *REALLY* helps a lot.

If you want to try a metal brush [insert obvious caveats here], I'd try a *brass* one.

When I was rebuilding the suspension compents of my Camaro - I used Easy Off oven cleaner (outside) to clean them. Spray on, let sit, brush (WITH GLOVES) and hose off. Worked like charm. Of course, all the parts were off the car.

Be VERY CAREFULL with oven cleaner!!! Oven cleaner if not removed properly(neutralized) it will disolve aluminum!! Also does bad things to rubber! Seals, bushings...etc Use as a last resort! I would let your cleaner what ever type sit longer and power wash it off! Any metal brush your going to use is going to take off the paint! So if you like painting springs and shocks go for it! Just my .02$

+ on the Power Clean. Dont know about suspension part cleaning, but it handles some serious stuff on wheels.

Agree with the oven cleaner comment. I had all the suspension parts off the car and planned on painting them anway. The stuff does work though.
