Cleaning Greasy Door Hinges

Just a quick question about 3M SMR, does it contain any fillers or is what you see is what you get??

Well, the reason I ask is:



I was trying to get some scratches out by hand using SMR. It was not getting them out. So, I got out my new PC which I had never used before that I purchased from Griots along with Power Polish #3.



I used the Power Polish #3 with the orange pad as suggested by Griots and then finished with PPCL on the white pad from CMA.



But, when I put the 1200W Halogens on the paint, it was swirled. So, I then applied SMR by hand again, washed with Dawn and applied 3 coats of Zaino Z5 and 4 coats of Z2.



Thus, I really don't know if the Griots or PPCL put the swirls in the paint. They were kind of oblong in shape.



But, if SMR has fillers this is a temporary fix. What did I do wrong and can they be removed without fillers?

1200w Halogens are bright. Under them you will be able to see everything! Stuff that doesn't show up under normal light will show up under those halogens. I think puterbum would be able to elaborate more because he has done testing of abrasives and used bright lights to observe the results.



Ohh, and to answer your question. Yes 3mSMR is full of fillers and oils. They are actually a pain to get off your paint, which is why I do not like 3m SMR. I prefer meguiar's #9 Swirl Remover.
 
Won't the fillers and oils get removed from washing the car with Dawn? I plan to use the PC w/SMR (also bought #9 to try) and then use Zaino afterwards. Many here have told me to Dawn wash after SMR/#9 when using Zaino. Won't the Dawn remove the fillers and oils and also their benefits?

Yes, Dawn will remove the fillers and oils. You can't have anything, including oils and fillers, on the surface before you apply a polymer product or it will not bond properly to the surface. This is the reason for the Dawn wash before applying Zaino.
 
a 3M rep I met told me that Perfect-It III Machine Glaze is about the same / slightly more abrasive than #39009 SMR and less than Finesse-It II, but with no fillers. I haven't tried this yet . . .

I could not find previous thread. I have used AWESOME on grease before but afraid to touch any painted surfaces with AWESOME. What is a safe degreaser to use on greasy door hinges? I will then re-grease them once cleaned. I need a degreaser that is safe to use on painted surfaces.

Try some dawn dish soap and tooth brushes FB. Painters foam brushes work well too for hard to reach spots.

I have some really good degreasers that work but only get by the gallon , if you want those names too I will post them .
 
honestly, the grease that builds up needs something more potent than dawn. I would try q-tips and 91% IPA to get the build up off. then you can get the rest of the residue with a good APC degreaser.

A 25 degree tip is what I am currently using and I get no water on the interior and at the least a little mist on the thresholds.

You also have to be using it up close and be quick yet effective.

I have a Troy Bilt (gas unit)

That sounds really good. I'm going to give it a try with my electric Karcher, but I don't know what type of tips I have.
