Claying with a soap mix vs. a specific lube?

Was wondering who just uses a car wash soap mix as a clay lube and who uses a specific clay lube product and why?

Thanks for the info.

I use Clay Magic and have a gallon of Auto Magic #49 Body Shine. It's "purple". I just like to pretend that chemical families should stick together. :nixweiss What do I know?

Edit: I believe #49 is the Clay Magic product they use in their clay kit. People use various QD's and soap and water and claim NO degregation of clay. OK by me.;)

I do. Seems to work just fine in my applications.

Some suggest that the soap denegrates the effectivenss of the clay. I dunno.

I do it everyday.

I will say that the lubes included with the kits, like Mother's or ClayMagic do technically work better. But regular car wash saop and water works great and is less expensive.

Water and carwash (Zaino); but recently someone here suggested using vinegar instead while claying. Anyone else tried that?

I find that when I use car wash as a lube that the clay bar (clay Magic) doesnt last as long. It falls to pieces and looses both its colour and its cleaning ability.

Anyone else found this?

has not happened w/ 50/50 water spray and wipe mix

I find that as long as i don't store my left over clay in a soap and water mixture and only use the soap and water mix as a lube my clay is fine. I must also say that i tear my clay into small sections, do a few panels, and throw it away. I don't normally save used clay. I did a test on using the soap and water mixture to keep the clay from drying out during storage and it did infact deteriorate the clay.

I like using GoldClass+water best....I save some clay.......you never know when you might want to remove some grit from your exhaust....

Depends on the job, I do it both ways (lube vs. soap). Some clays are VERY sensitive to car wash soap (Griot's) while some aren't bothered by it at all (Autopia Block). I found Mother's to be somewhere in between the two, and basically OK to use with the soap.

That's another good point :up The clay i did the test on was Clay Magic wich did deteriorate being stored in the soap and water mix.

Should I store my Clay Magic in a qd mix or water only mix? i have some Erazer clay in a qd mix, seems ok so far:confused:

Yup, I stored mine (clay magic) in Woolite mix and the bar got all gummy and fell apart.

I clay with Gold Class and store clay magic in it, fine every since....

what is the proper way to store clay? i usually keep it in the plastic box it comes with and haven't found a prob. i use h2o and soap, but have used qd as well same results, but clay will"dry" with the h2o tech, but by that time its ready to be thrown out anyways. vinager sound good i'll try that next. i use vinagar for hard water spots. pew!
