Claying rocks!

Finally had a very nice day in the twin cities yesterday so I washed and clayed my 2004 Nissan Murano. It amazes me every time I clay how much crap it pulls off the paint and how much better it looks.

Though I did use my clay bar up after only half the car was done so I have to buy more and finish it.

My question to all of you is do most of you use just s+w as a lubricant, just water or do you buy the lubricants they market for claying?

I usually just use running water out of the hose while I clay but now I am wondering if I will get better results by using something else.

I use a wash mitt & soapy water for clay lube.

I have an 04 Murano in Sunlit Bronze color.....and agree clay is great.....I use a QD spray for clay....I like the way it slips over the car and I can see the finish better...Also this is a big question....why do you feel like you need to get more clay to finish up the job....was that a used piece of clay? or a new bar?

I can get quite a few cars from a bar of clay.

It was a wolfgang clay bar that I had left over from last summer. Yesterday I had folded, twisted and used up the last square inch of available clean clay. I think I got about 8-10 uses out of it so its about time. :)
 
You used a whole clay bar on an entire vehicle?? What happened?
EDIT: Okay, I see now. it wasn't a new clay bar. :)


I agree with mgm2003, I clay during the wash phase.

Got it!!!! how do you like your Murano?....I like mine with the exception of the transmission kind of hard to get use to
 
i use adams detail spray but all clay is is a resin with an abrasive in it so you need tomake sure it is well lubricated or it will csue damage. So dont ue just water, however soapy water will work or anykind of detaikl spray. If you are looking at savinf money use pb SSS, wash the car first and oncesits washed and dried used more sss and do one panel at a time.

I like it alot. The transmission, though ackward at first, is actually very nice now. I think my wife is going to inheirit the murano as I am looking at getting a bmw 5 series this spring. :D

That's just what I am doing the wife drives the Murano she likes the SUV feeling and I drive the 540i BMW....I like the feeling of going fast
 
Heh howdy neighbor! Im right around the corner from you in Woodbury!

I too spent all day yesterday detailing. That is what happens when you are "downsized" from a company. Grrr....Looking for a full time job is a full time job.

Today is apply Klasse AIO and 2 coats of FK 2180. Tomorrow another coat and then pink wax time. We shall see how this looks compared to Zaino and PBs

I usually just use a QD for clay lubricant. I have plenty of it around, but I only really use my PB's for actually QD'ing the car. The other 3 or 4 bottles get used for the lubricant.
 
You know what works awesome as a clay lube i think. Is to foam gun the car down. Gets really sudzy then clean the area with a washmit and refoam the panel and clay. It works great then once your done just rinse the car!
 
This is a great thread. I have been washing, claying, and washing again. If I skip the second wash (provided I don't start claying during the wash), will the lube affect the next step products (i.e. polish and wax)? I wipe the lube away thoroughly, and since it is a QD I use, I am thinking I can skip the second wash. Comments?

Yes, you can definitely skip the second wash. IMHO, it is one of the biggest wastes of time you can have on a detail.
 
Hey Badfish. This is information that I just recieved strait from Poorboy Steve the other day while talking about S&W. When Claying you can cut the S&W to a fifty/fifty solution and still get the lubrication necessary to clay.

I personally would never use just water to clay. If it is working for you it is al;right with me. I am just a little leary thinking about that clay abrading the paint with out any lubrication other than water.
