what is a degraded claybar like? does it like fall apart or something? so far my clay magic bars haven't fallen apart when used with zaino z7.. of course, it could also be the soap.

For me, i don't dry the car 'fully' like I would after a weekly wash. Then I clay (clay magic) using PB S&W (50:50 diluted) as lube. After claying, rinse or a quick re-wash. :)

It is much easier if you are using foam gun. Wash, rinse, refoam. Not sure what clay some are using but I have never had a problem with soap degrading my clay.

soap and water .... meguairs hyper wash+meguairs blue clay ( in spray bottle some time .

im looking for very soft clay bar ?

I voted yes. I use a fresh bucket of soap for lube. Not a lot of soap, just enough to work the clay. Even if I use a spray lube, I always rinse the car off after i'm done.

I do it, but I wash my car and rinse it completely first. Then fill up another bucket of fresh water and soap, apply on car and then clay.

I have had success with Mother's, Zaino and Clay Magic clays using Z7, Gold Class and NXT without the soaps breaking down the clay.

Not sure if/how you can get it in your area, but the Sonus Ultra-fine (green) clay is about as soft/gentle as they get.

Seems that it's the specific clay/shampoo combos that either work OK or don't.

I've always figured (perhaps incorrectly) that the Mother's is the same as the clay that Griot's sells. I've had it break down when used with Griot's shampoo. My Sonus clays break down a bit with the Griot's too, enough that I went back to using Glyde or some other dedicated clay lube (well, at least most of the time).

It's not like they just *dissolve* or anything, but for more than a quick spot-clay you might run into trouble. Strikes me as funny since the Griot's shampoo is so mild on my LSPs :nixweiss

I've never done both at the same time, but I'm willing to try it out. I suppose if you thoroughly wash & rinse a panel, you could safely clay. I might give this a try when I do my spring cleaning.

I've never done this before but I think I will try this next time I wash my car. I'm all about trying to be as efficient as possible..

I do the same as jtford95, i.e. wash the entire vehicle first and then change out my wash solution and rinse buckets. I then do a second wash with the fresh solution and use that as clay lube. I'm effectively washing twice and using the second wash as my clay lube. Then drip method and WW dry and begin paint assessment then polish/buff. I've done it this way for a couple of years and like the results but YMMV.

Puckman - I think you could save more time if you got a foam gun, and foamed the car up the second time instead of washing it again. Unless of course you like the idea of washing twice to make sure you didn't miss anything.

No I only do it dry.

Problem with doing it while washing is the bar falls to bits, easier to drop, rest of car is drying while your working each panel (so you have to keep re wetting the other panels)

By having the car dry, I don't have to worry about that re wetting and just an ultra soft pakshak WW sucks the lube up in a flash.

I can also use my special polishing lube at the same time.

I wash, rinse, and then don't dry but rather go straight for the qd (mix of ONR + water) & clay.

That is only on the full details though.

I use the foam gun and Eurow wash mit to wash first >> Rinse >> Spray with foam gun >> Rinse >>> FOam gun with Clay.

I like to use flowing water as the lube. With soap, I get an odd breakdown of the clay. It's not complete or permanent though. When it's soapy, the clay becomes crumbly. Wash the soap off, and it's back to its normal clay like self.

Interesting, I've found it vasty better to clay a cold car than a warm car. Much less problems with the clay sticking and smearing.

I use soap and water, and never had a problem. Now, I use a clay that *might* be considered hard to mold, but removes every single particle on the paint flawlessly, and does not marr the paint at all. It saves a ton of time for me!

Soap and water works really well as a lube, but it breaks down some clays so be careful.

Regular hand soap won't break down clay, most car wash soaps will though.

Also regular old water works fine as a lube which is why some pros will clay after the rinse step during washing/prep.

I have used a soapy water solution in a spray bottle and I have washed then made a new bucket of soapy water and used my wash mit on the car itself in place of a actual detail srpay. Havent had any problems with either way.
