Clay while washing?

Hey guys, I have my reservations about this method. Curious who uses it, how they use it, and what the objections are?
 
Well when I found out that most lubricants are concentrated soap I now use wash water with a higher concentration of my normal auto soap as a lubricant. It's much faster than a spray.
 
I usually do it. Soap and water works really well as a lube, but it breaks down some clays so be careful. It saves a ton of time if you do the process right.
 
I've been using Zaino Z7 concentrate (as per directions) as clay lube while washing, or the regular clay lube. It's faster, I feel, than having to rewash the car (if there's lots of residue from the clay lube).



Basically, after washing a panel with a mitt, rinse off the dirt and now, instead of drying, spray down some clay lube and go to town. Then rinse & dry, or give it another pass w/ the wash mitt.



While this worked fine for me, I am not sure how good this is sometimes. For example, sometimes if I rinse and don't rewash the area w/ the mitt, I get a little residue left, but it all comes off when followed with Zaino Z6 wipedown.

Yeah, I clay instead of drying to save time. The time a detail takes is important so any corners I can cut is good :)
 
I voted "yes" but I do it both ways. One nice thing about doing it while I wash is that it's easy to rinse/wash off the residue from the Glyde, my favored lube.
 
So rinse the panel, soap it with mitt, clay it, soap again? and then rinse off?



how does that sound?

It seems like a bad idea to try to clay w/o rinsing the original wash.
 
what about loose particals that could potentially still on the car after washing but before rinsing? wouldnt it be safer for the clearcoat to rinse them off instead of claying them off? :nervous2:



maybe wash, rinse, wash, clay, rinse? would this be worth the extra time?

Yes, maximum lube, can cover a larger area at a time and no residuel when finished.

DO NOT DROP Clay in wash bucket.



Most clays will degrade and most importantly there is grit at the bottom of the wash bucket that could ruin your day.
 
I have a detail coming up this sat, still haven't decided how I'm going to go about this. I don't really mind doing QDing as lube, but what ever saves me time is preferred.
 
After I rinse the car off i use clay with lube, but I use less lube because there is still water on the car. Then I rinse off after the claying and dry normally.
 
I've done it both ways as well, my preference is to do it as a separate step.



Pro: It is quicker.



Con: Soap concentration does break-down the clay (at least it did with my z-18 bar using Duragloss soap)
 
The poll is a bit confusing. I wash first, rinse off all the dirty particles, and then I put on the soap solution and begin claying. Is the OP asking about claying when the vehicle is still dirty? A bit confused. I voted yes.

I'm pretty sure the OP was asking about claying the vehicle after washing but before drying, as opposed to claying after drying and using QD as lube.
 
I wash, rinse, spray w/ Final touch and clay, then dry w/ MF. I've never really had a problem w/ clay residue. I use to wash, rinse, dry, then clay w/ QD. The new way is alot quicker and you don't use near as much QD like some said eariler because of the water left on the panels.
