Clay Lube

When I use clay, I have always used it with a clay lube or QD. Last week when I clayed my Silverado, I decided to try something different, since it takes a whole bottle of lube for the truck. I mixed up a clean bucket of Meg Gold Class shampoo and water. Using a microfiber applicator to apply the shampoo suds for lube, it seemed to work just as good and a lot cheaper! Do most of you use a spray lube, QD or something else?

If its real bad or neglected, I will use a dedicated clay lube/QD. Other then that, I usually use water when rinsing. I can ususally get by, by doing this on cars I currently maintain.

water isn't usually quite slick enough. If I don't have a cheap QD that I can use as lube, then I just mix some soap and water and use that. Something that works well is when I spray a few shots of Eagle One Buckless Wash into a water bottle. It is thin enough that it lubricates the water nicely. It is a messy way of claying though. Usually I wash the vehicle afterwards to get all the streaks off. I do that after I clay anyway just to make sure there isn't any clay or grit sticking to the surface, but when you use soap and water as lube then it makes a bit more of a mess. It takes a whole 3 minutes to clean up. lol

You have to be very careful when using something other than the intended lubricant that the particular clay you are using was designed to work with. The lubricant is extremely important as it is the only defense against marring and scratching when claying your car. Claying can be quite an aggressive process if not used properly, and will make your detail that much more difficult and involved due to the marring you could possibly introduce.

Another reason to be careful when using random car wash shampoo's or qd's is that the clay may have a bad reaction to whatever product you decide to use. I have heard many times of people having clay literally fall apart in their hands when this happens.

I'm not saying that using a car wash shampoo or qd with a high amount of lubricity is always bad, I'm just saying to always test a small area and be very careful when doing so.

I REALLY like the Clearkote Quik Shine. It's like 11.75 for 32oz from brilexsolutions. It's an awesome clay lube!

I recommend it.:woot2:

I have used a mix of wash soap and water in a spray bottle as a lube and have never had a problem with it. I have used it with Megs, Sonus, and Clay Magic clay and none have fallen apart. If you don't have a QD laying around mix up some wash soap and water in a spray bottle and you will be good to go.

I always wash the panel with a fresh clean sheepskin mitt after I have clayed.

I use one of the 28oz bottles of Long Haul truck gloss I got from Big Lots for $3 each :bigups

I'm surprised nobody has commented on the "whole bottle of lube" statement. Am I the only one who thinks that is really excessive? What size bottle are you starting with?

As I don't like to skimp on the lube I use an ONR mix. Never had any problems with that or a soap water mix.

I agree, I could easily do about 8-12 cars with a 950 ml bottle, perhaps he's using the smaller bottle.

Auto Magic's body shine has always worked well for me.

Me too. Seeing that they produce all the clay sold in the US, their lube would be the best? I mix mine 50/50 with water.

i also like to use ONR as a clay lube . I just add a little more than i usually would just to get that extra lubricity.Has been working great for over a year now and it really cheap to make.
