Clay bar lubricant

What is everyone using for lube in volume?

I've been making my own out of car wash soap/water and its been working, but the clay gets too wet and starts to fall apart. The clay does not work as well, especially the megs red pro clay, when it gets wet. The instant detailer evaporates much faster and does not make the clay fall apart. Buying the instant detailer at $5.99 per bottle gets very expensive, very fast. The stuff I make costs maybe $.05 per bottle.

Not a detailer in business so my picks are probably not suited for someone like you buy

ONR at detail strength, Dodo Juice Born to be Slippy (the best IMO), and Meguiar's Last Touch.

All works great with ONR being the most versatile, Meguiar's Last Touch being the best in price and Born Slippy as the slipperiest lube of the three IMO.

ONR works great for a clay lube. I always have some mixed up in a spray bottle for door jambs, wheels, etc so I just grab that, never any problems. I use it as a lube at the regular dilution, seems to be a little too slippery at the lube/QD dilution.

ONR or meguiars last touch detailer at a 1:1 ratio works better, but if you want to tape up the car after, you need to either IPA wipe down the car or re-wash as the last touch doesnt seem to allow the tape to stick to anything

ONR - a half cap full(quarter oz) per 32 oz bottle of water... doesn't get cheaper than that PLUS the actives in it are light enough that if you feel you need to wipe the paint with alcohol prior to polishing you will not have to work extra hard like you would with something that intentionally adds lots of gloss.

That is because of the degreasers in the car wash soap, breaks down the clay. Try using regular liquid hand soap instead, just as cheap but easy on the clay. Bud taught me that one.

Otherwise we use ONR at washing strength.

Regular old water works as well.

So a half cap of ONR to 32oz water will do it? That would be cheap. I have never tried using ONR with clay.

Get a pump that screws into the top of the gallon size container. One pump = 1oz., add that to 2 gallons of water and you're good to go.

Makes me wonder if dawn diluted would work well... Usually we're wanting a stripped surface for work after claying anyway. I'd imagine the soap residue may get annoying though.

Any soap will work fine but anything made to cut grease will break down the clay.

This reminds me of years ago fighting off some 1Kp and 476 layers after a heavy heavy wash.. I had to use p21s straight as a lube with meguiars mild to get it off...Needless to say I very quickly gave up on the idea of "citrus degreaser" as a pre-wash with no agitation to stripe anything but remains of lsp.

your compounding/polishing should have taken the remnant wax layers off after a degrease and wash. Sounds like a decon kit is what you needed, or maybe even wolfs brake duster on the paint for a decon! I'll have that on order from DD soon!

wait....its 1/2 a cap to 32 oz for a clay lube ratio? ****, Ive been doing a heavier dose more like 2oz to 32 oz for clay lube! SOB!!!!!!! LOL

no on the dawn or citrus wash, it will degrade the clay after one use! blew through too many clay bars with that concoction. switched up to ONR or last touch, or chemical guys luber and clay lasts longer, and works better!

Still love Last Touch for an affordible dual purpose product. This is some slick juice at full strength and works great as a clay lube at 1:1.
