City Won't Allow Me To Wash My Truck!!

I can't believe this!!! I just moved to Calgary, Alberta and was talking with some people at work. They were commenting on how clean my truck was and I mentioned that I enjoy washing and taking care of it. Then someone tells me that the city has a by-law in place that states that you can't use soap to wash your car in your own driveway!! I nearly freaked! So I check the city's website and sure enough its true! Calgary won't allow the use of ANY kind of soap - not even bio-degradable - to wash a vehicle, only straight water other than at a car wash. Apparently they are concerned about algy growing in the sewer systems. I'm not sure what to do (and moving isn't an option). I just can't belive this *$%# is actually true....

To make this even worse, Calgary has a huge amount of dust in the air - daily dusting is an absolute must. I'm really concerned about scratching.

Oh, and the cherry on top is the fine for getting caught is $500 - $3000 for a FIRST offense!!!

ONR is your answer. In my city we don't have such a law, and even with perfect California weather I often choose ONR over regular wash as it is faster and leaves your car looking super glossy and slick. If your car is really dirty, you can always pre-rinse with the water and then ONR.

I missed this part. Dusting with something like a California Duster will scratch the surface of the paint. Any form of duster, really, will imbed swirls in your paintwork.

Wow, thanks eveyone. I'll check out ONR...hopefully that will be what I need to my truck looking great. Obviously the idiots that made this by-law don't give a crap what they're vehicles look like!!!!

Yes or maybe they are tying to increase the sales for ONR. :chuckle:

Yes, it's true that it can leave minor scratches. However, the minor scratches that the duster leaves behind can be easily polished out. I like having a vehicle that ALWAYS looks freshly washed - even when I don't have time to actually wash it.

Oh, Calgary also has a law that you're not allowed to have a clothes line in your back yard because it may be an eye-sore to your neighbors :)

every city has stuid laws like that... the reason is becasue its to expensive to take them off the book.. just not worth it...

but calgary still beats regina.,.. although we cant watch our dogs run away for a week....:xyxthumbs

Kentucky doesnt have laws like that! Thats one thing I love about Kentucky, we dont have ANY stupid laws. I can use oil to start a fire if I like. Heck, alot of people still have straight pipe for their poo(that IS illegal though).

I can believe a law that stupid exists, but I CAN'T believe that it's enforced. Much less to the level enforced here, $500-$3000 fine? Ridiculous!!!

I know many have already said it, but ONR, or DP 4 in 1. I have used both for about 6 months now because of the drought - we aren't allowed to wash our cars, even in our garage with ONR, but I don't care. A few gallons of water is far less than I would use with a hose. LOL

Not true if you know what you're doing. I use my duster daily during the summer and never get swirls from it. The key is to have a good wax on the car. ONLY use the duster once the car is totally cooled off. Many people push down on the duster and yes, that will contribute to swirls. I just barley let the strands touch the car and as long as your car is cooled off and waxed, the dust will come right off with no prob.

Wax provides minimal protection against swirls. It may increase slickness but that is about it.

It has got little to do with how people use a duster, more than how it works. The way a duster damages paint is that it picks up little bits of dirt and drags them across the paintwork. There is no way to prevent it using the duster.
