New member
Picked up a 7" buffer and was learning all about how to use it here.

I am a little confused on what to use to get rid of the polish residue before waxing on a fresh 1 month old paint job on my motor cycle trunk and side bags. Is it best to just wash with soap and water and then dry and then wax. Or is there something out there to wipe it down with that wont hurt the paint and allow the wax to adhere well to the paint. Maybe ask this in a differant forum later on.

with the paint being so new you do not want to apply any wax. the paint has the "gas out" whoever painted it for should have told you that.
 
Welcome to AF from the lower part of the state. Out gassing has been a controversial topics around here, but most will tell you to wait a while before doing much more to it. I also suggest a smaller backing plate and pads for your machine. A 7 inch pad on such small areas is a recipe for disaster.

oh yea what type of "buffer" did you get? are you talking a rotary buffer or an orbital "buffer? if its an orbital then there is no changing the backing plate and that is only good for MAYBE applying wax. if you have a rotary buffer then i hope you have alot of expierence with it. rotarys are great machines when in the right hands and using common sense but can also cause the most damage if not careful or paying attention

Most of the wax spreaders I've seen are 10 inch, but Id might as well be in the stone age when it comes to those.

I should have mentioned that I painted all this myself. First time for everything so far starting with the painting. I used ColorRite's paint since they claim spot on for matching and they are correct on that! They are the only ones out there that mix the paints for bikes and boats and such. Yes the 7" was a bit of a pain for the tight areas and I burnt through in spot so we had to take a few steps back and redo that error. Learned as I went along. When I get a chance I will take some pics and post em up. It is far from perfect but it was a great experiance and next winter I plan on making it perfect ;-) I am very happy with this first time turnout considering it was all rattle can. 3 coats color and 4 coats clear. I did extra clear with the thinking that I was going to learn on wet sanding and polishing.

I do like the looks of the Porter Cable orbital. Maybe get one of those down the road ;-)

Nice. ColorRite makes some damn fine paint. Make sure and post some pics up. That paint sands and buffs really well for rattle can paint. You'd swear it was sprayed with a gun when its done right. Sounds like a fun project.

Welcome to AF! I am also from Northern Illinois, near Fox Lake. Where are you located?


I agree with the above post. Allow your paint to out gas for at least 3 months, thats what I go by and really never have problems.

Here is a few pics of the color and project I am working on. I really love the metal flake how it matches the original bike color.

Like I said it is by far perfect but not to bad for the first time painting and polishing.

Wow. Nothing to be shamed of there at all. Metallic can be a nightmare to spray evenly. Looks like a pretty slick paint job to me :)
 
Wow you did a great job. I wouldn't have guessed it was rattle canned or that it was your first time.
