Charging Family Members

I'm the same Angelo. All of my family is in Tenn so I don't have to deal with that, but that being said I think I would detail their cars for nothing if they asked me to. :D

Sometimes its lunch/dinner, or if the work requires extensive product usage, then its gonna be charged on product cost (minus labor).

I just have them do something for me Example: My dad owns a painting company and generally knows a little of everything to do with home repair, ill find something around the house or shop that needs painted or fixed. He would do it anyway if i asked but it works out.

For a family member then it's lunch on them. No Charge
+1. But it counts as their Xmas/Bday gift and they have to make a commitment to care for the finish with at least minimal maintenance (even if they're just lying to my face).

I also ask them to have the car washed the night before and I do not clean interiors. I tell them if they don't want to deal with their funk, why would I? :D

That's a good idea. Hmmm, my son is a professional painter. If I wash his car, maybe he'll paint my house. Hmmmm.

I say that because I don't have any family by me, so it works very well for me................

That makes quite a bit of difference. I have a large family, and they all live near me. If they got the word I was doing details for free or for a lunch - I'd be doing free details every weekend of the year all year.

Now, my mom - I don't charge her. But that's different.

I guess there are certain family members I wouldn't charge. I wouldn't charge my mom (although she insisted on paying me when I detailed the Navigator prior to selling it) and like I said, I detailed dad's for a Father's Day gift. But, this is my wife's brother's wife and absolutely trashes her vehicles and her husband (my wife's brother) is so stinking lazy he'd never do anything to it or for her. So, that's where I come in. If he's not going to lift a finger to keep it clean, I don't really expect to be used as a crutch, hence the $175.

I don't know if you guys encounter this, but I seem to quite a bit. My family normally wants to use my detail "skills" when it's time for a good cleanup. However, I never know what to charge them, or if I should charge them at all. My dad suckered me into detailing his 1500HD Chevy for Father's Day, which was a WRECK inside and out and took me a good day and a half!! I would have been much better off getting him a $50 Lowe's gift card!! On the other hand, my mom had me detail her Navigator prior to selling it and I charged her $150 and it turned out to be freaking spotless inside, but it was still a 8+ hour job, so I didn't feel bad. Anyway, I've done my sisters van and others as well. But, I have my sister-in-laws van coming up and it is a complete and total disaster and I know that it'll be a 10+ hour detail, or more with most of that being interior. I plan on giving it a quick exterior detail because she doesn't give a crap about it and it's white, so a quick runaround with M205 and then a coat of BFWD will be it.

I guess my question is, or what I'd be interested in hearing is what, if anything, do you guys charge, or better yet, what kind of discount do you give family members?

You don't have to reveal your pricing or anything, but just talk in general numbers.

Thanks! I can't wait to get before/after shots of this interior, it's a freaking mess!!

HA! That's about right, I think my mom was always easy on me, because she felt sorry for me. I had to work my ass off with my dad from the age of 14, laying brick/block on the weekends and all summer long, while my friends were at the swimming pool and goofing off. I can't and won't complain though, it made me who I am today and kept me going back to college every fall, that's for sure. I was a grunt mixing mud, building scaffolding, carrying brick and block up the scaffolding that I had just built until I was around 16 or so, then I made my old man teach me to lay brick/block, it seemed a bit easier. Anyway, I think my mom was a little easier on me knowing that I had to not only work for dad, then I had to come home with him at night, when all the other workers could go home and bitch about him. No complaints though, dad's business has done VERY well over the years and I will probably get involved in it eventually, plus it put food on the table and kept me from wanting too many things over the years growing up.

It's a nice trade to have under my belt, but I don't think I'd want to go back to doing it full time, that's for sure.

For my parents I wouldn't charge anything. Especially all of the money, clothes, vehicles they bought me over the years. (When I was living at home).

As far as other family members. I don't charge my in laws, but for everyone else I do and have. It's been a long time since I've cleaned any family members vehicles. I live too far away now. LOL

Now it's just conversation at the family dinner table on Sundays. LOL

To be honest I normally try and avoid cleaning cars for other family members though. Because like was said they all believe it's an 30min-1hr job and they want it to look like my cars. Plus they only want to pay 10-20 dollars. I tell them politely I'm busy.

I don't need the money, or the hassle. Don't mind helping, but you know how it goes. You do one then all of them want the same deal.
