Change your counterweight...NOW!

With all the endless discussions about PC counterweights, I have to suggest that EVERYONE with a PC using ANY backing plate and 6" pads or larger, invest $1.99 and go get the 6" counterweight!!!!

It makes a world of difference in speeds over "4". There are now zero vibrations. If you disagree, you're only out $2.

You can get them locally at any authorized Porter Cable service center, (they may have to order it- it will take 1 week), so no need to order online.

It is the best investment I've made since the PC itself. I worry a little now about the damage I may have done to the bearings by using the old counterweight at high speeds. :-(

Thanks for the input Biff, it's advice that I also agree with. :up What backing plate are you using right now (or size)? Just curious.

AMEN!

I couldn't agree more - I have no idea why some distributors insist that the 5" counterweight is "fine" for PC use...

I switched my 7424 to a 6" weight when I got it - best $2 I ever spent, especially on detailing supplies. :D

I bought the 7335 because I wanted the 5" backing plate to use with 6.5" pads.

Heheh, cool. Sounds just like a rerun of my PC vibration test - I also use that PC pad with a stick-on adapter and I also found the bigger weight feels nicer at higher speed settings.

Answers my question about the counter weight. If you order your PC from Coastal Tool you get a free 6" velcro backing plate and the 6" counter weight.

Oh and Fuel it says on weight "Use 6" pad only".

The weight has the # stamped on it. You will also need a Torx bit to remove it, but that's not a big issue.

It does make a difference as I switched from 5 to 6 last week. Much smoother with larger pads.

Deanski

Geez, I can hardly imagine what the smaller weight must feel like. Ive been using the one stamped 6 on it from the beginning, and at higher speeds, the thing gets my hand buzzing so much I have to stop after a while just to scratch the buzzies out :) The number 5 must be all but unuseable.

The smaller weight isn't all that different actually. :) Here's that PC Vibration Test that I mentioned earlier. I think the difference in weights must get exaggerated at higher speeds, especially if you have a heavy plate/pad combo. I was too chicken to try a 5" weight/6" pad combo because it's obviously mismatching :p, but that combo must vibrate like a mofo!

Jason: Have you tried calling a local PC service shop? I can't get them here, but most people seem to be able to! :p

Brian, Looks like I will have to call the shop out in Queens in NYC. Been meaning to get it tuned up a bit too. Road trip! (lol only about 15 miles.)

yea the 7336 comes with the 6"
At least, it should. ;) Once in a blue moon someone gets a wierd PC with a mismatching weight. I believe it says "use 6 inch pad only" on it?

They should just tighten with a screwdriver. They are a different configuration granted, but a flathead did the trick for me.

Just got the 6" counterweight and it is 10 grams heavier than the 5" counterweight. Will give it a try next weekend.

is it just me or is my pc feel really unbalanced even with the 6 in counter wieght and the backing plate givin to me by coastal tool? any way o fix it. I thought the pc would be much smoother... maybe its the pads im using... megs 6.5 in. any ideas guys and gals?

I've always thought that big PC-branded backing plate looks heavy... I don't suppose you have a post office or kitchen scale to weigh it on, would you? :)

All I know is, the Meguiar's 5" backing plate is a bit lighter than some others, but don't know about the PC one.
