Chamber of commerce

I have read allot about joining the local chamber of commerce to promote my business.

I understand that most have monthly networking meetings (one in the evening at a members location and another in the morning) and usually 1 or 2 bigger "business expos" or "business fairs".

Do any of you belong to your local chamber?

If so how do you promote your business? Is it worth it to join. My local chamber charges $225 per year to join?

The BBB wants $400 for me to join them. Pass.

I'm really irritated by their marketing anyway. On my answering machine, it clearly says "Calls from telemarketers are not welcome and will not be returned". They ignored that and said "You need to call Ms. whatever her name was at the BBB." I knew none of my recent customers have been unhappy with my work but there is a detail shop with a similar name whose owner writes hot checks all over town which is probably indicative of his detailing skills as well, so I figured maybe a complaint about his shop was attributed to mine, the same way suppliers call me about his hot checks.

Nope. No complaint, no compliment, they wanted me to join. She tells me they get compliments from customers and I should join so they can pass that along to anyone who calls for a referrence, blah, blah, blah, my brain was leaking out of my ear by the time she was done. She then tells me the BBB only extends an invitation to join just once so I had better not pass it up...and then told me it was $400 to join. I told her there was no way I would pay that kind of money. She tried to tell me it was a bargain and cheap advertising and I told her I didn't even advertise at all and was booked up a week in advance all the time. No reason to spend $400 and told her I was not interested in the least.

Remember when I said she told me they only extend the offer one time? Three weeks later, on my answering machine, "You need to call Ms. whatever her name was at the BBB." So much for the BBB.

I was not happly with the Chamber of Commerce, most the networking meeting where meat markets. I did not like there political views, they were trying tell me who to vote for.

I did join the BBB because I am pretty much the only detailing buisness that could join. The other detailing shops had to many complaints and could not join.

What about your chamber of commerce experience?

None really, but the BBB is a another organization that some pros may be interested in and I thought I would warn you about their tactics (at least in my area).
