Centering the PC foam pad

Is there a foam PC pad and back that can be centered? I can use the PC at 4.5 speed all day long, but at 6 it vibrates quite a bit. I can't seem to get the pad centered by hand.

Step up to the Edge 2000 pads . You do away with the backing plate and use an adapter which the pads snap on to with no centering at all . The pads are 2 sided which is real nice. Do a search for them and see what you come up with .

Try this-

To centre a foam pad on the PC, set it upside down with the Velcro backing plate facing up (this is easier if the side handle is attached) using the tips of your fingers as spacers against the edges of the backing plate. You can centre it with near perfection most of the time.

On a DApad, if its not prfectly center, does it really make a differene? The pad is going in two directions anyways in a circular motion. I would not suggest running the machine on speed 6 either.

If you get the Propel pads and backing plate, the plate fits exactly in a slightly recessed area on the back of the pad. It's very easy to center it quickly every time.

With no pad on the backing plate my PC runs quite smooth. I tried the finger method, but was always off center enough to be uncomfortable.

I had thought about using the Meguiar's rotary backing plate that's self centering and making an adaptor so it would fit the PC, but the Edge pads and adaptor were cheaper.

try the heavier counterweight from the 7336?

Its also been suggested to take the side handle off and hold on to the head of the PC, this seems to help a bit, even on speed 6.

Oh and why not use speed 6, i find it helpful to buff out #80...??

The PC is a polisher. Used with different compound, it can remove different types of defects. It does not perform the same as a rotary in defect removal. The PC is a great machine, theres no doubt about it, but running it at its higest speed to remove defects was not its designed purpose.

With all due respect, if speed 6 is not within its "designed purpose", why does it have that setting? This sounds to me like a pad/backing plate problem, as has been discussed before.

I've found that working pads at speed 6 significantly increases the rate of wear & tear on the pads. There is a big difference between 4.5 and 6.0. It's kinda like earthquakes. :) I'm of the opinion I can do anything at 4.5 that I can do at speed 6. It just takes longer. This is the price I pay for wanting longer pad life.

Mikeman out.

I think this recommendation was made specifically for Meguiar's foam pads. I never had a problem with Lake County pads at this speed (although I usually work in the 4.0 â€â€œ 5.0 range)...

The pads and plates I haven't yet taken out of their original packaging have never worn out! This is clearly much easier on the pads even than running them at 4.5!

Which is to say, of course they wear out faster at higher speeds. But if you can't use them at all at 6, then perhaps they are not compatible with the machine...

What ever setting you run the PC at its going to vibrate , yes it vibrates more at the higher settings and if your pads are off center.'Tis the nature of the beast.:) The PC vibrates do to the action of machine . Its no rotary as far as smoothness of operation goes and it will never be.
