cats on my hood problem revisited

Some time ago I posted how cats were getting on the hood of my Jet Black BMW at night causing scratches. I am a veterinarian and love animals, but this feline behavior is not appreciated. Well, I can't very well put my entire car cover on every night. I live in Seattle, and when the cover gets wet it takes days to dry it, and I do not even have a place to accomplish that goal on a regular basis. So I finally decided to use a mattress sheet on the hood. This seems to help and is convenient. I can just put the cover in my trunk in the morning, and if need be place it in the dryer so it will be ready for the next evening.

Carl, what happens when it gets windy?

Is there a way you could clip a bungee cord to the sheet and fasten it under the front of the car for security when necessary?
 
Bill, I have not had a problem with it not staying on yet. The elastic in the mattress sheet is attaches on both sides of the hood near the windshield, and the other end attaches around the front spoiler. It is actually very secure. My biggest problem is forgetting to put it on. During the summer it was not a problem. Now the cats are coming back due to the fact that it is getting colder at night.

Carl I used this same solution up to 6 years ago .. same reason and for industrial fallout .. only difference is I got a bottom fitted sheet for a baby crib. The elastic corners hold it snug on the hood .. If not quite tight enough get the wife to put a pleet in it.



I picked up a few at the thrift shop for $1 each .. new they are only $6. Give it a try.
 
are the cats now trying to use the cover to keep warm? is there anything else you could do to keep the cats away from your car? hopefully the sheets keep the car protected.
 
I saw in the griots garage catalog a battery operated mat that gives a tingle to the kitties so they learn not to jump on the hood.

Doesnt sound too inhumane to me :D
 
Try putting some contact paper sticky-side up on the hood/roof/trunk for about a week. Cats really hate sticky stuff on their paws. It's how my wife and I trained our cat to stay off of furniture and where not to sharpen claws. It might be a pain to take it on and off for a week or two but the culprit should leave your car alone after that.
 
Thanks for the tips. I think I will look into the pad from Griot's garage, as "training the cats" is really what needs to be done. As far as getting a dog goes, I have two German Shepherds, but unfortunately cannot leave them in the area where the car is parked. In addition to cars and detailing and college football, German Shepherd Dogs are a passion of mine. Two weeks from now I'll be off to the the German Shepherd Dog Club of America's national specialty show in Albany Oregon. That will be something; there will be hundreds of amazing shepherds competing for top honors.
 
You could leave hood open , given the kitty kitty's a nice warm place to sleep . Then sneak up ,slam hood shut, start engine and create some work for the practice . Or build a garage .

I've used HOT Sauce to stop are office felines from chewing the puter wire , maybe you could come up with a bed sheet impregnated with it.
