Cat scratching hood

New member
Moved into a new apartment and wouldn't you know it there are a few cats around. Well as you guessed it they jumped on the hood of the car and since it was so slick (thank you FMJ, OPT, and AW) they were slipping and scrached the he#$ out of it. Any way to keep the cats off-spreading pepper or something on the ground. Funny thing is my hood isn't even warm since it is a rear engine car so they may have been jumping from hood to hood. Bad thing is the hood was just finished.
 
Try searching here on "cats", this topic comes up from time-to-time and usually seems to lead to the inevitable suggestions of violence against cats, at which point Tort has to come along to issue warnings or even shut down the thread. Bottom line, you're very limited in your options, but do a search for a few possibilities. A car cover *might* help.
 
I had this happen to my car as well due to a few neighborhood strays. What I did was tape down some contact paper sticky side up all around the car with a little cayenne pepper sprinkled on for good measure - the neighborhood cats got the message quick and never came near the car again.



But since they seem to be going hood-to-hood in your situation, there are sonic cat repellent devices on the market that apparently work quite well.

Yeah, they are strays-no tags on the collars and the old ladies feed them so they stay around. I am considering calling the SPCA or pound to put out a trap and pick them up but then they will probably be put down. I will try the cayenne pepper thing and contact paper first. Thanks.
 
Lay a heavy blanket on the hood (to keep it from getting any more scratches.) Put mousetraps on the blanket and then cover the traps with a double layer of newspaper.



Outcome: Cat jumps on hood, mousetrap snaps but doesn't hurt cat due to newspaper, cat beats feet off of the hood, unharmed but wary about jumping up there again.



Lather, rinse, repeat. After a few nights the cats will leave your car alone.
 
Thanks - Now I got Nugent's "CAT SCRATCH FEVER" stuck in my head, this can go on for hours, till I annoy the heck out of everyone around me!
 
An old trick to keep cats off of furniture is to cover them in foil-wrap... for whatever reason, cats hate it, and it's almost a gaurantee they'll never jump back on the article that was covered in the foil. You could always try a few blankets or a cover with foil over the top, dunno if they'll continue to stay off afterwards, but it's worth a shot IMHO.
