Castrol winshield treatment > Rain-X

I have always loved the castrol stuff for the winshields. The someone convinced me to try Rain-X again. I stopped using it because of glare it would cause at night. Well I tried Rain-X again and again I still hated it. Compared to the Castrol stuff it seemed to leave a fine haze on the windows that caused a glare when driving at night.



The Castrol stuff is hard to find now, I was only able to find it at a Walmart recently after hitting 4 other autoparts stores. I cleaned and reapplied with Castrol and the winshield beads like mad and no glare.
 
I stopped using RainX just because the Castrol Accuvision was much easier to apply. I think RainX lasts longer, but it's not an issue since application of the Accuvision takes about 1 tenth the time of the RainX.
 
I saw it in Walmart, for anyone interested in it, Walmart should probably be your first place to look
 
I think both have their place in my detailing arsenal. In my experience, Rain X works better, and lasts way longer. However, it is much more time consuming than the AccuVision. I use the Accuvision for "touchups" or "quickies". I apply Rain X maybe twice a year (and it can easily last that long for me).

When applying Rain X to prevent the haze, try this: Clean the windows like normal. Apply Rain X according to directions. Do not buff off, but wash the car like normal, including the windows, with car wash soap. Dry. Works great, no buffing, and no haze!

This method changed the way I thought about Rain X. I have always used Rain X and used to just grin and bear the "old-fashioned" application and removal process....what a bear! But with this method, I put a fresh layer of Rain X on during every other wash because it is so easy!

What is so hard about applying rain-x? I don't understand, get the rain-x sprayer and wipe, let dry and mist with water and remove :D I need to find some aquapel too!

I never got the same results with the spray bottle method as I do with just applying the Rain X before washing. I would always find spots I missed or didn't buff off...and I would always find them at night.



Doesn't matter though...just another way to do it. If everyone in Michigan used Rain X year round, I'd feel a bit safer sharing the road with them during rainstorms! :D
 
This Castrol stuff is like spraying water on the windshield. I mean, it does absolutely nothing when I have used it.



Eagle1 20/20 creates beading and it cleans. :)
 
Get aquapel and youll never look back. Rainx is a great choice though for other windows, just not for the windshield imho.
 
Aquapel is made by PPG....and at least for me...was tons better for application than Rain-X. I too, hate the hazyness at night.



I get my Aquapel from my local auto bosy shop-PPG dealer.



I don't think the Aquapel gives the same beading effect as abrand new fresh coat of Rain-x...but it lasts for months and months.
 
Matt, Aquapel is supposed to be a "professional only" type of product, right? What did you have to do to get the body shop guy to sell it? What 's so difficult/tricky about the application? Cost?

Tom...I bought it at my local auto body supply shop. They are a PPG dealer...just walk in and get it.



Goes on easy...it comes in a "tube" with a felt applicator. You break the capsule inside and it runs onto the felt. Just glide it over the windshield...(I then do the rear window too)...then one more time over the windshield. it dries very quickly.



Then, just a wipe with a paper towel until dry.
 
Rain X certainly works better and lasts longer than Accuvision in my experience, but it is more difficult to put on. I have both and to be honest with use really don't use either than much anymore. I just do my windows with EFCP and I call it a day, unless I decide to polish them with Autoglym.

Stop by your Jiffy Lube and they should have it in stock (they buy by the case...I used to work at one). I think the price is $20 if you want them to apply it but ask if you can buy it and do it yourself. For the price difference alone, I stick with Rain X.

The seller says he's liquidating his stock: 550 applicators, and so far, it looks like the winning bid is $0.99 each. Since he's only sold 75 so far, and there's only a day or so left in the auction, it's likely that the winning bid will stay pretty low. Just FYI, Aquapel costs about $4.00/applicator if you buy a case of 24 through a distributor, so $1.00 each is pretty good.

Thanks for the link Tort...just signed up for a bunch. Geez...wonder what shelf life is?



I think I paid over $6 each the last time I bought 'em.



The only drawback to the auction is that I think the shipping is a bit high...but if the price stays low...it's no biggie.
 
Crap, I didn't even think to check shipping, and there's where a lot of sellers skim profit. Here's to hoping the price stays low, then . . . :up
