cash or check?

do most of your customers pay in cash or check? if by check, how do you make sure the check wont bounce? (happened before).

Over 1000's of details I have only had 2 bad cheques and both covered them quickly. I guess i have been lucky.

I get about 60-70% checks, the rest cash. Only had 1 check in 15 years I couldn't collect on-and maybe 4-5 that either had to be resubmitted or the customer covered with cash. The one I couldn't get taken care of was a woman who a few weeks after the detail got evicted from her house for non-payment. Guess I was really low on the list of people she cared about paying. Filed it with the city attorney, I guess she never got caught.

Definitely get their driver's license number on the check, you will most likely need it to file a hot check charge.

You can always call the issuing bank, give them the acct # and the amount for the check and ask if funds are available to cover the amount.

I work for a bank, and while I can't quote other policies, I know for a fact our bank doesn't disclose this info over the phone, and depending on the person, may not even in person. I do it because I'm just saying "yes" or "no" and not giving out balances, but we don't verify funds over the phone because someone could have a customer targeted and know they have at least a fair amount of money, and just make up a number to see JUST how much they have. It's been done..

I think we're saying the same thing...I wasn't suggesting the bank would tell you the balance detail of the acct, but rather just a "yes" or "no" answer.

That was my main point ;). we don't even give a yes or no over the phone.

Just a quick aside, I know you folks spell many words differently to us Brits but didn't realise you use "check" and not "cheque".

I spell it "cheque". ;)

The majority of my clients pay in cash, a few by cheque.

A lot by cc and the balance by cash. I prefer not to take checks but if I have to they will be a long time client

One comment was for over the phone, and one comment was for doing it in person.

To clarify: I don't confirm over the phone, but will in person.

No one at our bank confirms funds over the phone, like I state earlier. Sorry for the confusion.

I have a simple motto "In God I trust, all others must pay cash!"

seriously though, I accept checks from very few customers, the ones I do accept them from are very well established with me and I know them very well on a personal level. Everyone else must pay cash.

I try to encourage my clients to pay by cash by offering them a slight discount. If they pay by CC or check, then they will get the full price. If they are a regular CC/check paying client, then I will offer them a slight discount for the higher end jobs.
