Carpet fluffing

Any suggestions on how to fluff those areas of carpeting that are constantly under your heel? I pulled my driver's side mat out this morning, vacuumed it, and scrubbed it in the bathtub, then rinsed it real good. Finished up with using my Bissell LGM to suck out most of the water. The pile on my Subaru floor mats is real short. I was hoping the areas would fluff up after cleaning, but they are still a little matted. Any thoughts?

Use a rubber bristled brush (Groit's Garage) to raise the nap of the carpet once the carpet is thoroughly dry.

Brushing when dry helps, but it seems like once the pile starts to actually mat down, I can never restore it to its original condition.
What I do is buy a new set of mats and make the old ones my winter mats.

FWIW, the Lloyd mats I have in the Corvette, (summer only, I have some OEM style ones for winter use.) seem to stand a lot more use and still look good. They weren't cheap, but not a lot more than OEM for most vehicles.
